The Bayern Munich board may thought twice about a few more new recruits in the summer transfer window if they knew just how persistent the topic of squad depth would be. At the beginning of the season it was the topic on everyone’s lips. As Bayern continued to grow into their strong start to the season, the issue of squad depth slowly tapered off. However, after their weary Champions League loss to Arsenal, the thought-to-be-buried topic has fully resurfaced.
Bayern Munich manager, Vincent Kompany, once again had to deal with the persistent line of questioning. However, the 39-year-old head coach, found a way to ice skate past the questions by answering without really giving an answer.

I understand the question because we lost against Arsenal and it wasn’t easy today. But as I said it’s part of football. At the end of the day we distanced Leipzig by another two points, that’s important. I don’t think it’s anything surprising. We also have to appreciate wins like today’s.”
Bayern may not be able to dance around the squad depth issue for much longer as their next fixture looms — a high-stakes DFB-Pokal encounter against the only other team, bar Arsenal, that has been able to take points off Die Rekordmeister this season, Union Berlin. And there’s no respite after that either, closely followed by a Bundesliga encounter against VfB Stuttgart and Champions League clash against Sporting CP.
Can the small squad on its way back to a full recovery stay healthy much longer with such a dense fixture list? Well, the Bayern board would certainly like to think so.
