Their fifth successive victory puts them top of the sixth tier on goal difference from Weston-super-Mare and Hornchurch, although both sides have a game in hand on the Gulls.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementTeenage striker Kieran Wilson - making his debut after joining on loan from Exeter City earlier in the week - gave the Gulls the lead with a superb 25-yard strike 10 minutes into the second half.
The victory was completed three minutes later when Jordan Young curled a free-kick into the top corner.
"I think we restricted Chelmsford to two chances, really, which is really, really pleasing," Torquay manager Paul Wotton told BBC Radio Devon.
"We had two moments of top, top quality - you won't see two better goals than that in a game this weekend.
