This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.Zootopia 2 is topping the domestic chart over Thanksgiving weekend while Wicked: For Good is hit by a major sophomore slump. 2025's Zootopia 2, which opened on the Wednesday before American Thanksgiving, is the sequel to Disney's 2016 animated smash hit Zootopia, which took place in a city populated with anthropomorphic animals and which grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
Zootopia 2 debuted just five days after Wicked: For Good kicked off its opening weekend, taking in a massive $147 million 3-day haul that gave the movie the highest-grossing domestic debut for a Broadway musical adaptation in history.
Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Zootopia 2 is projected to earn a 3-day total of roughly $98 million by the end of Sunday and a 5-day Thanksgiving weekend total between $152 and $156 million. This is more than enough for the Disney sequel to take No. 1 at the domestic box office for the weekend.
Zootopia 2's debut total could continue to grow before the end of the weekend, because the data shows that 61% of ticket buyers purchased same-day tickets, which is unusually high for the modern era of pre-sale-forward ticketing. If this trend continues, estimates could balloon by the end of Saturday.
Even if it sticks with its current range, Zootopia 2 is set to nab the second-biggest 5-day Thanksgiving weekend haul ever (behind 2024's Moana 2 with $225.4 million). It has already earned the second-biggest Black Friday haul ever ($38.5 million, behind Moana 2's $54.3 million).
While Moana 2 is clearly the stronger of the two Disney animated sequels (it had a far superior 3-day debut as well, with $139.8 million), Zootopia 2 is tracking well ahead of the original Zootopia (with its 3-day debut of $75.1 million), which could put it on track to become a billion-dollar success.
Meanwhile, 2025's Wicked: For Good is expected to earn a 3-day total of $63.3 million and a 5-day total of $93.5 million. This gross is enough to push its cumulative domestic haul to $270.9 million, making it the seventh highest-grossing domestic release of 2025 after just two weekends in theaters.
However, this total also sees Wicked: For Good dropping a brutal 57%, which is more than double the week-on-week drop of the original Wicked, which debuted in the same pre-Thanksgiving frame in 2024 and fell just 27.9% during the 3-day Thanksgiving weekend.
This is also an unusually rough sophomore slump for any pre-Thanksgiving release. Typically, the holiday weekend is so flooded with moviegoers that the previous weekend's blockbuster titles thrive alongside the new holiday releases. Below, see how the biggest pre-Thanksgiving releases of the past few years have fared during their respective sophomore weekends:
Title
Thanksgiving Weekend Drop
Wicked (2024)
-27.9%
Gladiator II (2024)
-43.6%
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023)
-34.9%
Trolls Band Together (2023)
-40.6%
The Menu (2022)
-39.2%
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
-45%
A sophomore slump of more than 50% over Thanksgiving is more or less unheard of, which could be a bad omen for Wicked: For Good's long-term performance. However, when looking at the raw numbers, it is still working in tandem with Zootopia 2 to provide a major influx of cash over the holiday weekend, helping the box office bounce back after a major lull in the early fall of 2025.
