The most recent Xbox Game Pass price increase was one of the most unwelcome announcements in the gaming industry this year, which is saying a lot. $19.99 a month for Game Pass Ultimate was already a lot, but it looks practically quaint compared to the newer fee of $29.99. Luckily, a current Amazon deal will let you undercut both of these prices.

Right now, Amazon is charging $18.99 per month for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, a dollar off from the old $19.99 price. This matches the discount that GameStop offers to Pro members, but the Amazon deal doesn't require Prime or any other paid membership. While Amazon offers no timeline for the deal, it could easily disappear after Cyber Monday.

Outside the Amazon deal, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is still $19.99 at most storefronts. While direct Xbox purchases transitioned immediately to the new model, retailers like Amazon, GameStop, and Best Buy have stuck to the old price for now. Discounts on top of that, however, are less common, and Amazon appears to be the only storefront offering one at the moment.

There's also no way to know if the $19.99 pricing at retailers will last forever. GameStop announced its intent to maintain the price immediately after the increase, so hopefully, at least one store will resist the $29.99 change for a long time to come. Without any knowledge of the actual cost for retailers, however, it's hard to say if this is a permanently sustainable proposition.

For what it's worth, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate does offer a lot of value, with access to a huge library of games that includes many day-one releases. Right now, that means access to recent hits like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

Whether the subscription is worth roughly $240 a year depends on how much you plan to use it, to say nothing of the official new price of $360. If Amazon's $228 offer sounds better, now's the time to act.

The deal is clearly attractive to a lot of Xbox users, as the Ultimate membership is currently listed as the site's #1 Best Seller in Xbox Games, Consoles, & Accessories. Xbox, pay attention — people like to pay less. Then again, maybe the price increase is working exactly as intended. When the new Xbox Game Pass price is so scary, a tiny discount on the old price seems so much more exciting.
