As expected, however, it's doing far better in overseas territories, where its running total stands at over $150 million. The second film of the franchise was especially popular in China, but the theatrical landscape has changed greatly since then, with Middle Kingdom audiences being far less enthusiastic about Hollywood movies. The spell was broken this weekend by Zootopia 2, which is eying record-breaking numbers in China, completely overshadowing the solid results that Now You See Me 3 had been delivering so far. Even as it struggles domestically, however, the movie has now overtaken one of the most surprising hits that the heist genre has produced recently.
By Sunday, Now You See Me 3 is projected to hit the $48 million mark at the domestic box office. It's still the lowest-grossing installment of the trilogy, but it's passing the $45 million lifetime domestic haul of Gerard Butler's sleeper hit, Den of Thieves, as we speak. Released in 2018 and directed by Christian Gudegast, Den of Thieves earned instant comparisons to Michael Mann's Heat upon its debut. It was successful enough in theaters and on the home video circuit to warrant a sequel, which was released earlier this year. Featuring Butler once again, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera concluded its domestic run with around $35 million. Now You See Me 3 brings back Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan and Morgan Freeman.
'Now You See Me 3' Is Poised to Pass a Massive Global Box Office Milestone
The threequel continues to trail both its predecessors. The first Now You See Me movie was released in 2013 and directed by Louis Leterrier; it grossed over $115 million domestically and more than $350 million worldwide. Now You See Me 2 was directed by Jon M. Chu, who is currently enjoying the success of Wicked: For Good; the movie made $65 million domestically and around $330 million worldwide. Now You See Me 3 has been directed by Ruben Fleischer, and is expected to pass the $200 million mark at the worldwide box office by Sunday. Produced on a reported budget of $90 million, the movie earned mixed reviews, and is sitting at a 61% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. You can watch Now You See Me 3 in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
