It has been a solid first week at the box office for the Finnish-language action sequel Sisu: Road to Revenge. Not only is the movie catching up with the comparatively staid Russell Crowe vehicle Nuremberg, which happens to be set in a similar post-World War 2 era, it is also on course to surpass its predecessor, Sisu. The original was released to positive reviews and enthusiastic audience support in 2022, grossing $14 million at the global box office. Sisu 2 is set to pass the $10 million mark by Sunday, and is currently sitting at around $7 million worldwide. While it isn't breaking any records, the movie has certainly found an audience for itself, and has overtaken a handful of past WWII-era movies in just a week of release.

The latest to have been surpassed is the largely forgotten Cillian Murphy-starrer Anthropoid, which will forever be overshadowed by the Oscar-winner's other WWII-era movies, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer, both directed by Christopher Nolan. While those two films grossed a combined total of around $1.5 billion worldwide, Anthropoid unfortunately tapped out at just under $5.5 million at the global box office. Released in 2016, the film was directed by Sean Ellis, best known for the drama film Metro Manila. Anthropoid was based on the real-life Operation Anthropoid, which resulted in the assassination of a high-ranking Nazi. The operation was executed by two Czechoslovak soldiers, played in the movie by Murphy and Jamie Dornan. Anthropoid opened to mixed reviews, and is now sitting at a 67% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "Anthropoid completes its mission rather unevenly but delivers a historically illuminating story with great performances to back it up."

'Sisu 2' Has Earned Excellent Reviews

Directed by Jalmari Helander, who also made the first film, Sisu 2 is an entirely fictional exercise in genre filmmaking. The movie features the returning Jorma Tommila as the ex-soldier Aatami Korpi, with Stephen Lang appearing as the villain. The movie holds a near-perfect 96% score on RT, with Collider's Jeff Ewing describing it in his review as "a structurally different riff on the original, but certainly in the same spirit." You can watch Sisu 2 in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
