The Boston Red Sox went all in last offseason to secure Alex Bregman in free agency, and it paid off. They landed the star, who was a huge piece of their puzzle this season. But the Red Sox had to give Bregman an opt-out in his contract, which allowed him to return to free agency this winter.
The Red Sox are going to need to win the Bregman sweepstakes again, or they're at risk of taking a step back from last season.
Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball recently projected Bregman would sign a huge five-year deal worth $155 million this winter.
..."After only giving him a three-year deal a year ago, I think it is unlikely the Red Sox double that this time around, but settling on a five-year commitment that pays him roughly the same AAV as last year (when factoring in the deferrals) would make a lot of sense," Finkelstein wrote.
The Red Sox have the money to make a run at Bregman. They recently added Sonny Gray to patch a hole in their rotation, which is a much more affordable move than many expected. As a result, they have the money to go after Bregman.
There are some other teams in the league who could go after the star, but the Red Sox should be seen as the favorites.
It's hard to imagine Boston's front office losing a bidding war for its top star.
