The main Stranger Things series might be ending with Season 5, but the franchise isn't going anywhere. There is already a Stranger Things Expanded Universe filling in the gaps in the plot and answering questions raised by the show, including comics, which could be the next big frontier for the sensational series after the finale airs.

A stage play. A LEGO set. A series of novels. Multiple comic book series, with more expected in the future. These are just some of the multimedia incarnations of Netflix's Stranger Things.

With a TV spin-off in development for after the end of Season 5, it's safe to say the the "ending" of the show is really just a new beginning.

"Stranger Things" Comics Are The Future Of The Franchise After The TV Series Ends

Dark Horse Comics Holds The Publishing Rights

Stranger Things has done more than just evoke 1980s nostalgia and capture the vibe of the era's classic blockbuster films. Like Star Wars did fifty years ago, it tells a sweeping, fast-paced action story that can only explore its own lore and fictional world so much. In other words, it invites expansion of its universe in supplemental material.

Publisher Dark Horse Comics has released four Strange Things comic miniseries, focusing on the franchise's main characters during the time gaps between seasons. Also notable is Stranger Things: Six and its sequel Into the Fire, which build on the mythology of the franchise by following one of Dr. Brenner's earlier test subjects.

Dark Horse has also put out several standalone graphic novels, including one starring fan-favorite character Erika Sinclair, and even one following the bullies from Season 1 after their confrontation with Eleven. It is a solid start to the Stranger Things Expanded Universe, but the comics can really kick into high gear after Season 5 concludes.

Spin-offs Are Coming In Multiple Mediums

Along with the canon Stranger Things comics from Dark Horse, the company has also partnered with IDW Publishing to produce two crossovers; one in which the Stranger Things cast met and teamed up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and another that put them in the world of Dungeons and Dragons.

The Strange Things comics released so far have helped fans bide their time during the long waits between seasons, but they have been in a holding pattern, waiting for the main saga to wrap up. That ending might close some doors to future storytellers, but it will open just as many, if not more.

That means Stranger Things is here to stay. It is among the biggest pop culture phenomenons of the last decade, and like when Return of the Jedi came out in 1983, its stellar final act is going to be the start of something longlasting. The Stranger Things Expanded Universe is about to level up when the show ends.
