Barrow head coach Andy Whing says he is ready to draw upon the experience of Neil McDonald after he joined the Bluebirds.

McDonald will serve as joint assistant head coach to Whing along with Craig Pead and he replaces Rob Kelly, who left for Reading earlier this month.

The 60-year-old most recently worked under Simon Grayson at Hartlepool United, but he worked in the Premier League at Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham with Sam Allardyce.

McDonald is back at Barrow for a third spell, having served as assistant manager to both Kelly and then Phil Brown.

"We wanted someone of Neil's experience," Whing told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"He's worked at the top of the game under various managers and he's been abroad as well.

"I met Macca last week and this week. He's been fantastic, everything that we want and I'm looking forward to working with him."
