Game of Thrones has a famously divisive finale, but a new series could vindicate the once-beloved series.

Game of Thrones is the gift that keeps on giving, and not just because of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which has already been renewed for a second season. According to the series author, George R.R. Martin, there are several spin-off series in the works, despite no traction for Winds of Winter. Regardless, fans can look forward to much more content arriving imminently. While it is anyone’s guess what is on the docket, viewers will expect that one of these series will be a continuation of sorts from the beloved and equally maligned flagship series.

When Game of Thrones ended in 2019, the series left many plot points in the air that confounded viewers. To name just a few, Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington) Targaryen lineage didn’t seem to matter in the long run, Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) was inexplicably crowned King of the Seven Kingdoms, and Jaime Lannister’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) entire character arc went up in a puff of smoke. Most of the actors have defended these decisions, but there is no doubt that fans have been seeking some sort of redemption. They may get their wish when these new series come to pass, if the Game of Thrones brand can recapture its former glory.

‘Game of Thrones’ Deserves a Second Chance

News about the upcoming new shows has been sparse, but HBO’s faith in the Game of Thrones brand seems steady. In addition to these potential spin-offs, the network has also ordered a fourth season renewal of House of the Dragon, in addition to a two-season deal for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

If the brand decides to set one of these shows after Bran’s coronation, it could have great potential. There is no way to undo the crimes of the past, but continuing the story may go a long way in smoothing over fan discontent. This had been a possibility when a potential Jon Snow series was in the works. When the last viewers saw him, he ended up exactly where he started, exiled beyond The Wall. If the series returned to the character, it could rescue Jon’s character arc and bring him closer to his predicted role on the Iron Throne.

The Jon Snow spin-off may be gone, but Game of Thrones shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss revisiting the Starks. The Starks were always the heart and soul of the series, and not all of their endings made the most sense. A continuation of their story could bring the siblings back together and would go a long way for the fanbase. After an entire series with the Starks being put through the crucible, bringing them back together would be an emotional catharsis.

Game of Thrones would not even have to bring back the original actors to make this plot work. A new series could take place decades after the fact, with new characters to bring this idea home. Descendants of Sansa’s (Sophie Turner) as Queen In the North or the next ruler of the Iron Throne could maintain the canon from the original series while introducing new stories that bridge the gap between the past and the present. With the help of more content, Game of Thrones could be the media giant that it was over a decade ago. Fans should tune in to new seasons of House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and can always revisit the classic series streaming on HBO.
