Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most important and influential anime of all time. Hideaki Anno's 1995 mech deconstruction was the definition of a smash hit, debuting to immediate acclaim that changed the anime industry and attracted a legion of fans. While the anime community at large has long been aware of Evangelion's popularity, it may surprise many to learn just how lucrative the series has been for one of its chief creatives.
As reported on by Automaton-Media, Evangelion composer Shiro Sagisu recently appeared on the Japanese TV show Platinum Family, a show about the day-to-day lives of influential people in Japan. The show interviewed Sagisu at his mansion in Paris, where the influential musician revealed that he receives royalty payments every three weeks totaling roughly 10 million Yen (about $65,000).
Of the lucrative royalty payments for his songs, Sagisu said, "When you see eight digits right in front of you, a person can dance."
Shiro Sagisu Is One Of the Anime Industry's Most Legendary Composers
While Evangelion is undeniably the biggest and most influential project that Sagisu has worked on, it's far from the only one. The composer has worked on huge properties like Bleach, Berserk, and Attack on Titan. In addition to scoring some of the best anime soundtracks of all time, Sagisu is also a record producer and jazz musician who has over 2,000 songs to his name.
Given this, it's likely that Sagisu's royalty checks are coming from a variety of sources rather than just being from Evangelion. Still, it's truly impressive for a composer to be so outrageously successful that they can own a literal mansion in Paris.
Why Shiro Sagisu's Work On Evangelion's Soundtrack Holds The Test of Time

Though Sagisu did not compose the series' iconic opening, A Cruel Angel's Thesis, he did have a hand in pretty much every other piece of music composed for the series and its films. Spanning a wide array of genres and styles, Evangelion's soundtrack is eclectic, reflecting the many different tones tackled in the series. Sagisu's work on Evangelion ranges from epic, to nostalgic, to goofy, and even gets ethereal in places, capturing the show's chaotic nature perfectly.
Evangelion's iconic mechs might be its most recognizable element, but it is the show's atmosphere that truly sets it apart to make it a revolution. Sagisu's music is instrumental to this, selling the emotion of every scene with aplomb.
Sagisu stands right alongside giants of the industry like Cowboy Bebop's Yoko Kanno and Ghibli's Joe Hisaishi in terms of status, so it's great seeing that Neon Genesis Evangelion's composer is living well and getting paid quite handsomly for a lifetime of creating great music.
