This article is intended for audiences 18 years of age or older, as it includes discussion of sexual content.
There's no shortage of Batman embracing romance and having it depicted tastefully throughout his comic narratives, with a seemingly endless supply of panels showing Bruce getting his freak on with Catwoman, Talia al Ghul, Joe Chill’s daughter, and every romantic partner in between. That said, many fans will find one now-discontinued Batman sex rule hard to believe.

Comic books have a surprisingly strict history when it comes to editorial rules and guidelines. These guidelines helped ensure consistency across books and provided writers with direction on what was allowed and, more importantly, not allowed in their narratives. Batman’s internal editorial document even earned its own nickname: the “Bat-Bible,” reflecting how seriously these rules were taken.
The Bat-Bible was the internal editorial document created by Dennis O’Neil during his time as Batman’s main editor in the late 1980s and 1990s, serving as a strict guideline manual for all writers and artists working on Batman titles. While it featured a myriad of rules, one stood out above the rest: Batman was not allowed to have sex under any circumstances.

This may seem counterintuitive given the Dark Knight’s civilian persona as Gotham’s most eligible bachelor, Brucie Wayne. Yet the Bat-Bible forbade artists and writers from depicting Bruce having any sex life at all. While this might seem prudish or unrealistic for a handsome billionaire, O’Neil actually had a reasonably valid and simple reason for this particular rule.
In the Bat-Bible, O’Neil explained, “[Batman] is celibate. Any kind of sexual involvement would take thought and energy away from his mission. He appreciates women, even admires them, but he cannot afford intimacy.” This explanation provides a certain narrative logic. Yet, as most fans know, this rule has long since been thrown out the window in modern Batman storytelling.

Thanks to a more liberal landscape, there is no longer a rule banning writers and artists from letting Batman have some good ol’ naked fun in his narratives, within reason, of course. Any depictions or dialogue referencing Batman’s sex life are handled tastefully and without explicit nudity, relying on artfully placed sheets and shadows to imply intimacy rather than show it outright.
Yet, DC has also grown more daring with the types of nudity allowed on panel, especially through its Black Label titles (i.e., its mature-rated imprint that pushes the boundaries of what comics can depict). Batman: Damned even went as far as showing Bruce’s male genitals. This is still far from an explicit sex scene, but with the comic landscape constantly evolving, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that DC (or the public domain) may one day take things further and give Batman his own erotica comic.
Bruce’s briefly depicted genitalia in Batman: Damned has since been censored in later printings and digital editions.
