Things got ugly at the end of the Monday night contest between the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementFollowing the conclusion of the contest, 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings walked up to Panthers safety Tre'von Moehrig and hit him with an open-handed punch.
It was later revealed that Moehrig had hit Jennings below the belt before the final whistle, which is what led to the 49ers wideout doing what he did.
After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged that Jennings was the victim of a cheap shot and said he was "proud" of the way Jennings didn't retaliate before the final whistle.
"The guy took a cheap shot and hit him in the balls. I was real proud of Jauan for not losing his mind out there," Shanahan said.
When asked about his cheap shot, Moehrig seemed to hint that Jennings had done something dirty to him during the game, but didn't go into detail.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement"It ain't really nothing much to it, it was just that," Moehrig said, per ESPN's David Newton. "Like I said, I'll take that one. He wanted to do a little dirty stuff, so it is what it is, man."
"It wasn't even frustration. It was isolated, that's that," Moehrig added.
Hats off to Jennings for keeping his cool while the game was still going on, but he might face a fine and suspension for his strike on Moehrig, although perhaps he'll avoid the latter considering the reason behind his punch.
As for Moehrig, he should and probably will face a fine for his cheap shot.
