Give me a lighthearted recap
Star Wars: The Clone Wars was generally an excellent addition to Star Wars movies and TV shows, but one Clone Wars story made absolutely no sense—and the show's Obi-Wan Kenobi actor, James Arnold Taylor, perfectly explained why. Although The Clone Wars was a relatively late addition to the franchise, it filled in the Star Wars timeline.
Not only did it provide significantly more context for Anakin Skywalker's Star Wars timeline, particularly why/how he fell, but also, the show went so much deeper into various characters' stories and plot points. Yet, The Clone Wars got one critical Obi-Wan Kenobi story totally wrong, and The Clone Wars' Obi-Wan Kenobi voice actor made it clear why.
James Arnold Taylor Is Right—Obi-Wan Not Defending Ahsoka Is Weird
Ahsoka Tano stands on trial in the Clone Wars with troopers behind her
One of the most pivotal moments in The Clone Wars, for multiple characters, was Ahsoka Tano's trial, after she was falsely accused of murder. Although the Jedi Council had the power to protect Ahsoka from the Republic Senate and handle the accusations internally, they kicked her out of the Jedi Order, putting her in danger of being put to death.
While Anakin did everything in his power to clear Ahsoka's name (and ultimately did) and was openly horrified by the Council's actions, Obi-Wan did almost nothing to defend Ahsoka to the Council, which was completely out of character. The Clone Wars' Obi-Wan Kenobi voice actor, James Arnold Taylor, shared the same viewpoint, saying:
"When I found out that Obi-Wan didn't really stand up for Ahsoka with the Council, I thought that was kind of weird and kind of a rip-off."
Taylor's assessment of this story arc is entirely accurate, not only because Obi-Wan would defend any Jedi when he believed the Council was doing something wrong, but also because Obi-Wan and Ahsoka had a special bond, and he would have defended her the same way he defended Anakin.
In fact, Obi-Wan knew about Anakin and Padmé, and he still didn't say anything to the Council because he loved Anakin and wanted to protect him. It's just impossible to imagine that Obi-Wan would stand by and watch Ahsoka be on trial and not have faith in and defend her.
The Clone Wars Got Plenty Right, But Not Everything
Obi-Wan and Ahsoka in The Clone Wars season 4 episode 15
This situation reflects a harsh truth about The Clone Wars in general: while the show got plenty right, it also had some storylines that just didn't work. This issue with Ahsoka's trial is certainly one, but other stories, such as the Council pretending Obi-Wan died and lying even to Anakin or Ahsoka being 'enslaved' just didn't sit right.
It's truly a shame, because there really were so many choices in The Clone Wars that were downright brilliant. The introduction of Ahsoka Tano is actually one such decision, as the revelation that she was Anakin Skywalker's Padawan and had this painful departure from the Jedi Order fleshed out his mistrust in the Jedi so much more.
Even the controversial choice to give Obi-Wan a love interest, Satine Kryze, was a stroke of genius, because it provided a better understanding of why Obi-Wan would know about Anakin's relationship with Padmé and say nothing—something that also, at first, seemed out of character.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Obi-Wan not defending Ahsoka while she was on trial. It's very difficult to imagine Obi-Wan Kenobi not intervening during this critical Star Wars: The Clone Wars arc, and either way, this was a very disappointing choice.
