A repair shop has refused to fix someone’s PlayStation 5 because of what’s living inside and social media agrees with them.
Thanks to this week’s Black Friday sales, Sony has no doubt sold a lot of new PlayStation 5s this autumn. While the console is notably cheaper at the moment it’s still pretty expensive, so it’s important you take care of it.
It’s always frustrating when a console breaks down, especially when they cost hundreds of pounds, but if you don’t store them in a clean environment, repair services might be unable or even unwilling to fix them.
For instance, one repair shop in the U.S. has shared video footage of a PlayStation 5 that has left other owners disgusted and horrified, because it suffered from a very literal bug problem.
The shop in question is named DVD Game Exchange and is based in Utah. It has its own Instagram account, where it uploads short videos highlighting some of the repair jobs it takes on.
One such video was recently shared to X via Financial Dystopia, which at first simply highlights a PlayStation 5 that wouldn’t turn on. The owner’s note says it went out during a storm, but further testing revealed it wasn’t a power issue.
Upon opening up the console and examining the insides, the video reveals that the interior is completely stained with something, which the shop’s owner says, ‘If you don’t know what that is, you’re privileged,’ before explaining the stains are cockroach droppings.

The shop theorised the droppings are the cause of the PlayStation 5’s problems, but it ultimately decided not to continue with repair attempts. Not because they couldn’t fix it, but because a cockroach was still present inside the console.
‘I don’t need an infestation in my shop. I’m closing this back up, I’m wrapping it in plastic and I’m invoicing the customer for return shipping,’ said the owner.

While we can’t imagine the console’s owner would be too happy to get their console back unfixed, and still need to pay the shop, you can’t exactly blame the shop for refusing service.
Reactions on X are similarly disgusted, with plenty of people sympathetic to the store owner. ‘Right there with him. Not worth the hassle,’ says The_Memeries, while TheNeonGreek adds, ‘Sounds like customer needs to spend less money on consoles and more money on cleaning their damn house.’
Others who claim to have similar experience with repair work have shared their own horror stories, with one person saying they had someone ‘bring in a PC tower that had a black widow infestation in it,’ while another claims to have found a rotting mouse inside an old computer.
‘All my active consoles get cleaned once a month. Retired consoles get cleaned every 6 months or before I hook it up if I want to play it. This is just gross, take care of your consoles,’ says the ironically named justfilthygamin.
