It's a pretty good time to be a Resident Evil fan. Between the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem, and the release of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village on Nintendo Switch 2, there's lots to be excited about. But there's one game in particular fans are dying to see.

I am referring, of course, to Resident Evil Code: Veronica. It's a firm fan-favourite, and there have been rumours flying around for years that an official remake is in development. The good news? It sounds as if the remake we've been begging for is closer than expected.

Resident Evil Code: Veronica Is Beloved By Fans

Their prayers might finally have been answered

First released back in 2000, Resident Evil Code: Veronica was one of the last "classic" games in the series before Resident Evil 4 reinvented the survival horror with more of a focus on action. Fans have been clamoring for a remake for years, and with the success of Capcom's last few remakes, it looks like our prayers might finally have been answered.

According to well-known (and frequently right) Resident Evil insider DuskGolem, the Code: Veronica remake is proceeding well. No word on a release window, which isn't a huge surprise given Requiem is the focus now, but it sounds like fans should be cautiously optimistic.

Here's what DuskGolem had to say:

"Code Veronica Remake is going super well from what I've heard, like RE:4 levels of good (which is funny since a lot of the same people). Going so well that it's actually ahead of their internal schedule and they're very confident in what they're making."

This is obviously hugely exciting news for Resident Evil fans, although it's worth remembering to take any leaks with a pinch of salt.

Resident Evil Code: Veronica Could Be Quite Different

A modern update for new audiences

Looking back at the last three Resident Evil remakes, it's likely the Code: Veronica remake will be a very different game. Expect the over-the-shoulder perspective of more modern Resi games, and probably some reworked story beats. This all worked surprisingly well for Resident Evil 4, so there's no reason it shouldn't work out for Code: Veronica.

It's been reported by Rely On Horror that there'll be some key changes to some of the characters. In the original game, Steve Burnside has a crush on Claire Redfield and is, to be honest, pretty creepy and cringe about it. It's said the remake will keep Steve's attraction to Claire, but make him slightly less of a weirdo.

It's also rumoured that series big bad Wesker will have a larger role, making him an even more integral part of the story. We've a way to go before we hear anything official, but it sounds like Resident Evil fans have a lot to look forward to.
