The Avengers may be Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but they're not necessarily the most beloved. Indeed, some members of the iconic team are outright hated by Marvel fans.

In some cases, they're overhated to the point that they deserve a second chance, or at least an apology. Here are the 8 overhated Avengers who honestly deserve better...

8 Red Hulk, aka General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross

Joined the Team in 2011's Avengers #12 | Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby

Red Hulk was huge news when he first launched, but he's become an afterthought to fans - the Hulk who isn't quite as strong as Bruce Banner. But forget he's a Hulk, and General Ross is a fascinating character.

One of the few older superheroes, Ross is a tactical genius who wants superheroes to act more like soldiers, with discipline and tactics that can actually change the world. After a life without the firepower to change the world, Red Hulk has become a one-man army with no time to waste.

As an Avenger, Red Hulk was a great character - someone who was trying to prove himself to the heroes while also shaping them into his idea of what Earth's Mightiest Heroes should be.

Red Hulk struggles with motivation, and doesn't have a particularly personal mission as a superhero. However, a little tinkering could bring him back to his prime.

7 U.S. Agent, aka Captain America, aka Super-Patriot, aka John Walker

Joined the Team in 1989's West Coast Avengers #44 | Created by Mark Gruenwald, Paul Neary, Tom Morgan and Kieron Dwyer

Avengers fans hate John Walker's U.S. Agent because he's a jerk, but superhero teams need jerks. Unlikable characters make for drama, and the Avengers have thrived on drama since the very beginning.

At the same time, John Walker isn't always wrong, especially when it comes to how superheroics affect ordinary people. With a unique perspective that's rarely seen in the Marvel Universe, U.S. Agent challenges the Avengers like few other heroes.

6 Hyperion, aka Mark Milton

Joined the Team in 2012's Avengers #1 | Created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema

Hyperion, Marvel's Superman, standing in front of a bright light. Hyperion, Marvel's Superman, standing in front of a bright light.

Marvel's answer to Superman, Hyperion is often seen as boring by fans, and in most cases, they're right! There are multiple versions of Hyperion in the Marvel multiverse, and the evil versions who want to take over Earth aren't worth knowing much about.

However, the version who joined the Avengers during Jonathan Hickman's tenure with the team was an interesting character - a hero who watched his world die and would never allow the same to happen to his adopted home.

A blood brother to Thor and an adoptive father to a group of weird hyper-evolved kids, this is the version of Hyperion that Avengers fans actually want to see again.

5 Starfox, aka Eros of Titan

Joined the Team in 1984's Avengers #243 | Created by Jim Starlin

starfox

The brother of Thanos, Eros is considered a creepy character by most casual fans. Able to spread love and understanding, early comics hinted that Eros uses his powers to cause women across the universe to feel attracted to him. His appearance in She-Hulk Volume 2 actually revealed he doesn't use his powers in this way, but the cliffhanger nature of the story muddied the water, leaving some fans with the impression that he's a predator.

Marvel has totally reinvented Eros since, essentially turning him into a Thanos-level operator who's afraid to live up to his potential because of the galactic menace his brother became. Sadly, it takes a long time to rebuild a reputation, and many fans remember Eros as a campy joke who might have assaulted his teammates.

4 3-D Man, aka Triathlon, aka Delroy Garrett Jr.

Joined the Team in 2000's Avengers #27 | Created by Kurt Busiek and George Perez

Delroy Garrett Jr. is a great character wrapped in a bad one. A former Olympic athlete disgraced by cheating, Delroy was tempted into the Triune Understanding cult, which gifted him an enhanced physique, with increased strength, speed, agility and healing. Delroy joins the Avengers to prove himself to the world, but is viewed with suspicion because of his links to the Triune.

That's a pitch for a fun character with a lot to add to the Avengers franchise. So how did the former Triathlon fall so far that the comics now use it as a plot point that he's the hero other heroes constantly underestimate.

Sadly, it's the details that earned 3-D Man such disdain from fans. Delroy isn't just strong and fast, he's exactly three times faster than a peak human athlete - a quality that is essentially meaningless in terms of understanding what he is and isn't capable of.

At the same time, Delroy has had exclusively terrible codenames and costumes, operating first as the uninspiring Triathlon, and then the painfully outdated 3-D Man, complete with enhanced goggles. Delroy has the bones of a great character with a lot to prove, but he badly needs a redesign for that to happen.

3 Synapse, aka Emily Guerrero

Joined the Team in 2015's Uncanny Avengers #1 | Created by Gerry Duggan and Ryan Stegman

avengers hero Synapse, aka Emily Guerrero avengers hero Synapse, aka Emily Guerrero

Synapse emerged from Marvel's disastrous attempt to increase the visibility of its Inhumans franchise (at the expense of X-Men), and fans found little to love in this powerful telepath, who influences the electrical activity of neurons in the human mind.

Fans hated the Inhumans push from the beginning, and Synapse was quickly forgotten after her creators' tenure on Uncanny Avengers concluded. However, there's nothing actually wrong with the character, and the Avengers definitely need their own telepath.

Synapse's real problems are a boring backstory and lack of personal drama, but it would be incredibly easy to imbue the hero with these qualities if Avengers ever chooses to use her again.

2 She-Hulk, aka Jennifer Walters

Joined the Team in 1982's Avengers #221 | Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema

She-Hulk Marvel Comics She-Hulk Marvel Comics

She-Hulk received a lot of hate following the release of her MCU show, the vast majority of it unjustified. Jennifer Walters is arguably Marvel's greatest heroine of all time, taking the 'Hulk' concept and going in a truly unique direction.

She-Hulk is the superhero persona of a timid lawyer who ultimately learns to be the woman she wishes she was, growing into a titan of superheroism and the law, while also being one of Marvel's funniest characters. She's also a great Avengers member, adding the opportunity for legal drama to their stories.

1 Hawkeye, aka Clint Barton

Joined the Team in 1965's Avengers #16 | Created by Stan Lee and Don Heck

Hawkeye in Marvel's Judgment Day Hawkeye's True Superpower Is His Attitude Featured

No-one else could be our #1 but Clint Barton, the world's greatest archer. While Hawkeye has been a member of the Avengers since their second-ever line-up, the MCU brought renewed attention to the unlikelihood of a skilled human keeping up with superhuman teammates.

Hawkeye's Bow

However, just like Batman, that's part of what makes Hawkeye cool. Through pure skill and a desperate need to prove himself, Clint keeps up with the most powerful beings on Earth, and he's actually not that underpowered once you factor in the various 'trick' arrows in his quiver, including sonic blasts, size-changing Pym Particles and a mini-nuke!

hawkeye takes out ultron hawkeye takes out ultron

Ultimately, Hawkeye is a victim of his MCU fame, with the movies stripping the character of his essential rebellious streak. The comic Clint Barton has never met a source of authority he didn't want to fight, and his lack of superhuman abilities makes standing up to everyone from Captain America to SHIELD all the more impressive.
