Sean Payton comments on Riley Moss penalties ahead of 'SNF'

Going into Week 13 of the 2025 NFL season, Denver Broncos cornerback Riley Moss leads the league with seven pass interference penalties (the next-closest player has four).

It's clearly an issue, one that Moss has acknowledged. "I can’t be in that position as much as I have been," he said ahead of the team's bye week.

Coming out of the bye, Broncos coach Sean Payton was asked about the frequent DPI flags for Moss during a conference call.

“With Riley, sometimes it’s technique, sometimes it’s the traffic opposite of a real good corner," Payton said. "Now Pat [Surtain] hasn’t been healthy [recently], but there are some things that I’m sure [Moss will] want to clean up. Then there are a few calls where we look at and it’s tough to try to clean up or correct something if you don’t agree with it.

"But overall, the penalty thing is not just one player, though. The penalty thing is by far when you look at the totality of it, and you do your homework on it, and you look offensively and defensively, that’s something that we as a collective have to get better at.”

Payton's right about that -- Denver leads the NFL with 93 penalties through 11 games. Those penalties have conceded 883 yards to opponents, most in the league. It's certainly not only a Moss problem. Payton's squad needs to clean up the flags coming out of the bye if they want to make a deep playoff run this winter.
