There was a subdued, solemn rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone as Liverpool’s latest abject humiliation drew to its close.

In truth, it was barely audible, and yet the mood it conveyed will have travelled across the Atlantic as John W Henry and his Fenway Sports Group hierarchy must now wrestle with an unimaginable dilemma. How will they halt what is rapidly becoming one the great sporting capitulations of the modern era, and certainly one of the worst in the gilded history of Liverpool Football Club?

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

Not since Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City has a Premier League-winning side been transformed to such an extreme from classy to calamitous.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool are free-falling so rapidly, even their early-season victories must now be fully reassessed to ponder if they should be lower than their domestic and Champions League positioning suggests. So poor are they without the ball and in their defensive structure, but for a few last-minute winners there would be questions about their Premier League safety.

b'

'

It is just as well Slot has so much credit in the bank for being a Premier League champion, because losing by three goals for a third consecutive fixture goes beyond the crisis of losing a sequence of fixtures. This has become a full-blown emergency. Slot was the new Bob Paisley a few months ago. The 4-1 defeat by PSV Eindhoven was as bad as anything under Roy Hodgson and the final days of Brendan Rodgers given the context of last weekend’s 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, which itself had followed the same dire performance and result at Manchester City. There is little evidence that a title winner is in hiding, even though the bulk of these players have the prizes to prove they can be far better, far quicker, far stronger and much fitter than this.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

It is just two months since FSG were considering whether to extend Slot’s contract, which has another 19 months to run. The Dutchman will be lucky to make it to another 19 games if this is how his players respond to calls to action.

b'

'

The American owners have been adept at taking the emotion out of the biggest decisions. Because of the horrendous circumstances of last summer, it is well nigh impossible to do so with regards to Slot’s position. Equally, the deep levels of concern after Premier League defeats will have been exacerbated by events at Anfield which are edging towards unprecedented, certainly in the post-1959 history of the club.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

This Liverpool team are now in the club’s worst run since relegation in 1953-54, which included a run of 15 matches without a win, 10 of those defeats. Slot’s run of nine losses in the last 12 risks surpassing that historic low.

This is not the first time in the past 10 years Liverpool have slumped alarmingly. Jürgen Klopp will testify about the dark days after the title win in 2020, and also not long after he was two games from a quadruple in 2022 as his great side tanked.

With respect, it was incomparable to this. At no stage were there any doubts that Klopp would fix problems, whether they were due to misfortune through injuries or misjudgements in the transfer market.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

Slot still has the extraordinary success of last season to shield him, but for the first time it must be credibly asked where is the evidence his defence can resist further attacks? Slot accepted that no manager can keep losing. Trust in his coaching skills is all well and good, but there have been many opportunities to show that is not blind faith. None has been taken.

Sporting director Richard Hughes and FSG chief executive Michael Edwards are in the eye of this storm, too. They have the same length of contract as their manager. Last summer there were many hoping the duo would commit for the rest of their careers.

Now, the longer Liverpool wilt under pressure, the more they will face scrutiny as to whether the coaching or last summer’s recruitment are the crux of the problem. It is possible it is both.

The latest shambles showcased all the dire traits which have become habitual over the past three months; amateurish defending, non-existent midfield cover and blind panic once behind. Every time Liverpool are chasing a game, a centre-half – usually Ibrahima Konaté – is sacrificed in a gung-ho cavalry charge.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

PSV Eindhoven are an accomplished rather than a world-class team. They were made to resemble the great Dutch sides of the past. After all the fighting talk, Liverpool responded like a steam-powered tractor more than a steam train. The lack of intensity as it unravelled was disturbing; pedestrian, anxious and riddled by the same errors.

For so long Virgil van Dijk has been cooler than jazz on a summer’s day. Five minutes in he was gifting a penalty, slapping away Joey Veerman’s corner after claiming he was shoved by his international defensive partner Jerdy Schouten. Referee Alejandro Hernández was having none of the protests. Another set-piece had been received as if a hand grenade had been chucked into the Liverpool penalty area.

Ivan Perisic dispatched the spot-kick and Liverpool already faced an obstacle they have not overcome this season; winning from behind.

November 26, 2025 Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk handles the ball before the referee awards a penalty to PSV EindhovenVirgil van Dijk protested his innocence but the penalty stood and Liverpool went behind - Reuters/Phil Noble

In fairness, they initially recovered and should have led by half-time. Dominik Szoboszlai, again one of the only players who should be immune from criticism, struck a 15th-minute equaliser after Cody Gakpo’s shot was parried by Matej Kovar.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

The signs were encouraging, but it is hard to recall Liverpool playing a complete 90 minutes since they won the title. Such is the condition of some of the players, a few look exhausted at the hour mark every week.

Once PSV regained the lead through Guus Til, and Konaté had completed his latest comic turn to allow Couhaib Driouech the first of his two goals, there was no belief inside Anfield that a recovery was possible.

The worry for Slot is that many more will now be thinking the same about his reign. He must hope that view is not shared at Fenway Park.

PSV fans moved onto “Don’t take me home. Please don’t take me home. I just don’t wanna go to work,” just before the fourth goal went in. This is a mullering and Slot looks stunned in the technical area. Fair play to Liverpool fans, they’ve not turned on their team - but many are heading for the exits. Their team have fallen apart in the last few minutes, with headers not challenged for and possession given away easily.

“Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life” sing the PSV fans. They are having a ball.

Liverpool are “hopeful” in everything they do going forward at the minute. Crosses getting hung to the back post, Isak pointing to where he wants passes played, Salah not looking incisive with his dribbling. Even Chiesa’s penalty shout was hopeful. It is a team that has lost all confidence. Isak also looked tired after going on a sprint. He is clearly not up to speed yet.

09:39pm

82 mins: Liverpool 1 PSV 3

Despite being two goals down, there is a distinct lack of urgency from Liverpool.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

Isak swivels on the edge of the box and gets his shot away. It should be a pretty simple save from Kovar but he makes a mess of it and the ball nearly creeps into the corner.

09:36pm

79 mins: Liverpool 1 PSV 3

Chiesa goes down inside the PSV box but once more the referee waves those appeals away. Gasiorowski gets none of the ball and clips Chiesa. Liverpool should have had a penalty in the first half and now should have had one in the second. Genuinely what is the VAR doing?

09:34pm

76 mins: Liverpool 1 PSV 3

Arne Slot takes off Konate to bring on Chiesa. Gravenberch will move back into the centre of defence alongside van Dijk.

09:33pm

75 mins: Liverpool 1 PSV 3

Kerkez shows great fight deep in the PSV half and wins it back for the hosts. He then gets his shot away from the left side of the box and it hits the shot well but it goes inches wide of the far post.

GOAL! Driouech punishes Konate error

A dreadful piece of defending from Konate is punished by the visitors and PSV now lead 3-1. Konate makes an absolute mess of a simple clearance and Pepi is running through towards the box. He cuts inside and gets his shot away, with the effort coming back off the post. The ball ricochets into the path of Driouech, who makes no mistake and slots home. That was appalling by Konate.

b'

'

Bad body language from Liverpool when that goal went in. Half-hearted attempts from Van Dijk and Gravenberch to rally the players but heads were down and there was no talking. No finger pointing either though, and it was clearly Ibrahima Konate’s fault for the third goal.

Perisic has gone down and his night appears to be over. It appears to be his left hamstring that is the problem.

GOAL! Til restores PSV’s lead

The visitors are back in front. Mauro Junior is allowed to carry the ball forward and spots the run of Til, who manages to get in front of Kerkez. The ball is great and the finish from Til is great but Kerkez should do better defending that situation.

b'

'

Mohamed Salah was beaten too easily for the goal. Mauro Júnior danced around him and there was no pressure as he drove forward and picked out his pass for Guus Til. Big moment now for Alexander Isak. The Premier League’s record transfer has replaced injured Hugo Ekitike and needs to find a goal for Liverpool.

09:12pm

55 mins: Liverpool 1 PSV 1

Kerkez wants a free-kick down Liverpool’s left after going over under a challenge from Man but the hosts will have a corner as the last touch came off Man.

The corner is sent in and van Dijk meets it. The ball comes to Mac Allister, who tries to get his shot away from six yards out but ends up going over. No penalty comes his way though.

09:07pm

49 mins: Liverpool 1 PSV 1

What is Jones doing? He attempts a suicidal ball across his box that is intercepted and is fortunate that his huge error does not lead to a goal. That was dreadful from Jones.

b'

'

Playing out of defence comes with full permission from the manager but players have to be perfect with their passing. Curtis Jones’ error was a shocker - if Ismael Saibari had not intercepted that ball across the face of the goal, his team-mate would have had an open goal.

09:06pm

PSV are often a 4-4-2 or a diamond, with Ismael Saibari up front with Guus Til. It can be quite an attacking system, although Liverpool are starting to see more of the ball and attacking with more intensity compared to the first 15 minutes.

08:32pm

32 mins: Liverpool 1 PSV 1

Ekitike does really well there as he picks up it around ten yards outside the PSV box and drives forward. He skips past a number of defenders and drives into the box on the right side. He then plays it across and Kovar spills it behind for a corner.

That is fantastic defending from Salah-Eddine. Gakpo spots Salah at the back post and plays the ball across the left side of the penalty area all the way across to the far post. Salah looks destined for a tap-in but Salah-Eddine is on hand to slide in to intercept. He stopped a certain goal there.

‘It is time to start winning matches again’

Good evening and welcome to our live match coverage as Liverpool host PSV at Anfield on matchday five of the Champions League.

Arne Slot’s men slumped to a 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League last weekend, falling to a sixth league defeat in their last seven outings and back-to-back 3-0 defeats in the league. That loss leaves the defending Premier League champions down in 12th, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal just 12 games into the season. They have now lost eight of their last 11 games in all competitions.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s game, Slot has described his side’s form as “unacceptable”. “I have said quite a lot of times, there are certain things that you can do better but this has not helped and has not been of use,” Slot said. “You can think of quite a lot of reasons why you have lost. From our perspective, at Liverpool Football Club, it is not acceptable. It is a situation you do not want to have. Now it is time to start winning matches again, but you have to do a lot to win a match. The simple things, they must do better. That is what we are not doing and that is quite easy to solve. Simple football is the most difficult thing.

“I would describe it as ridiculous, almost. Something I did not expect to be in. Not at any club I was going to work at, let alone Liverpool. That is unbelievable. If you can find an excuse, you will never find enough excuses to make you perform like this. Unexpected for the club, for me and everyone. But I am working at a club where if you need to face it, this is the best club to face it. The harder it gets at a club like this, the more we are together to achieve the things Liverpool usually achieve. I take the responsibility and feel guilty for it. We are busy working on it.”

Liverpool have three wins and a loss from their first four Champions League games. They have beaten Atletico Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt and Real Madrid, but fell to defeat at Galatasaray. The hosts will be without Florian Wirtz, Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni.

PSV won 1-0 at NAC Breda last weekend, giving them a six-point advantage at the summit of the Eredivisie. They have just one win from their opening four Champions League games, which was an emphatic 6-2 victory over Napoli. They have drawn twice and lost their other four matches, meaning they currently have five points at the halfway stage of the Champions League group phase.
