While Sasuke Uchiha has been down for the count in the latest chapters of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, the Naruto icon still has a lingering legacy carried by his newest protege. Boruto Uzumaki, scorned by his former village following the Omnipotence incident, bears the bulk of Sasuke's teachings, and even a precious keepsake, the Uchiha's iconic sword.
Sasuke's sword has seen plenty of combat across Naruto and Boruto, proving that even one arm down, Sasuke is still able to tackle even the nastiest Ōtsutsuki threats. Now, with the help of Sumire Kakei, Sasuke's sword is getting another power-up, and the latest chapter is a strong indicator that Boruto: Two Blue Vortex intends to bring him back.
Boruto's Sword of Kusanagi Upgrade Teases Sasuke's Return
Sasuke's fight with Kinshiki Otsutsuki in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter #28, Sumire brought Boruto back Sasuke's sword, which he requested to get repairs and a future tech makeover in chapter #27. With a tease of a technology not yet available in this timeline, and the latest chapter's hint by Sumire of a "certain special material" compounded into it.
Alongside the upgrade to the Uchiha Blade Jutsu Hagoromo allowing one to infuse chakra and enhance its sharpness and durability, Sumire enabled a key feature hinting Sasuke's return. On top of it now being enhanced with a Scientific Ninja Tool to prevent users other than Boruto or Sumire from handling it, it's also coded to Sasuke.
Provided Sasuke does return, being able to maintain Uchiha Blade Jutsu Hagoromo without persistently having to focus would benefit him as well as Boruto in battle, keeping the sword constantly enhanced, with other mysterious abilities teased to be revealed soon. It also crucially drains chakra of anybody not meant to wield it.
This could easily be out of respect for the sword's true owner, as Boruto is merely carrying it during Sasuke's imprisonment. But it also effectively means that, should Sasuke return, he'll be one of only three living characters able to wield it. However, with Hidari bearing Sasuke's chakra, this also implies the Divine Tree could hypothetically use it.
Boruto Has Already Lined Up Sasuke's Successors
Boruto pledging to protect Sarada when she becomes Hokage
While Sasuke has remained a largely integral character to the Boruto series, unlike many abandoned legacy Naruto characters, even his return might not be what fans want. Boruto has inherited all the Uchiha skills Sasuke can feasibly pass on by chapter #5, while Sarada has shown the might of her inherited Sharingan in chapter #21 alongside her Hokage ambitions.
Thus, Sasuke's return would remain as a supporting character, but the care for his most prized weapon is a key tribute. Boruto has even marked Sasuke's blade with his Flying Raijin technique, making it integral to his jutsu, even strongly indicating that, should he have to give the sword to his master, Boruto can teleport to his aid instantly.
Still, with Sasuke's sword given this key repair and upgrade in Boruto, it would genuinely be a waste not to let Naruto's greatest rival use it again.
Still, with Sasuke's sword given this key repair and upgrade in Boruto, it would genuinely be a waste not to let Naruto's greatest rival use it again. While the battle now turns to Mamushi's rampage in chapter #28, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is seeing its Divine Tree threats dwindle, with Hidari being the main obstacle to Sasuke's freedom.
