A Stardew Valley player took a peek inside the game files and found some very unsettling sprites, which of course became a hit with the community.

There aren't many secrets left in Stardew Valley, but an unsuspecting player looking through the game files stumbled upon some seriously weird sprites. It can take hundreds of hours to discover hidden features in SDV, and there are some very uncomfortable and odd moments in the game, but taking a look behind the veil is where really strange things can be found.

"Note to self: Stay out of Stardew Valley's game files," wrote Reddit user OkInfluence36, attaching a screenshot of some incredibly off-putting sprites found therein. The sprites are mostly nude (those that aren't nude have a white bikini on) except for shoes, sometimes green-skinned, have no arms, and are in a variety of bizarre poses. Amid general confusion, there are comments explaining that this is simply how sprites are stored for pixel art games, and now others are using the sprites to hilarious ends.

Stardew Valley's Files Are Hiding Some Weird Business

Combing through game files isn't your average activity, so it's understandable that there's an immediate reaction of confusion. On the plain white background, and without clothes or arms, the sprites just don't look quite right. There are also a few poses that don't immediately correlate to what players expect from the characters in Stardew Valley.

The explanation is that these are the various poses that the player character makes in Stardew Valley. The arms are animated separately, and the sprites for clothing are added on top of what's seen in the post above. Similarly, hair and hats are interchangeable, so these default sprites are bald. Each individual pose has to be saved in Stardew Valley's game files, and seeing them all side-by-side is a little unsettling.

Players Are Absolutely Loving It

The Stardew Valley subreddit has immediately jumped on the bizarre sprites and run with the silly poses. The post from u/mintzenn above cuts a few of the sprites together into a dance alongside Kool & the Gang's "Get Down On It." Their title is a direct response to the original post: "Please do NOT stay out of the SDV game files." Obliging a suggestion in the comments, u/mintzenn made another post with the intro of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust."

These sprites are usually altered by people making Stardew Valley mods, or by others digging around in the game files for similar reasons, but the dance has been an immediate hit. ConcernedApe's beloved farming sim has had almost unprecedented longevity, and the passionate community continues to have fun with the game – and its files – while waiting for Stardew Valley's 1.7 update. There are probably a lot of similarly strange things to be found in the Stardew Valley game files, but any uncovered will likely be turned into a joke rather quickly.
