According to HBCU Sports, Southern University is the latest to hire a former NFL player as their next head coach. Kevin Batiste of WAFB in Baton Rouge reported the Jaguars will announce Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk as their next football coach.

The Sporting News published an article last week on preliminary discussions between Faulk and Southern officials.

Faulk played 12 seasons in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts and the St. Louis Rams, rushing for 12,279 yards and 100 touchdowns along with 6,875 receiving yards and 36 touchdowns.

He won the 2000 NFL Most Valuable Player award, collecting over 2,100 yards from scrimmage and scoring 26 touchdowns, the fifth highest single-season total of all-time. He was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Southern fired coach Terrence Graves after an unimpressive 1-6 start. Former Alcorn State head coach Fred McNair serves as the team’s current and interim coach. Southern is 1-10 heading into the Bayou Classic this weekend in Faulk’s hometown of New Orleans against Grambling.

While no official announcement has been made by Southern University, all indications point to Faulk news following the Colorado Buffaloes season. Colorado goes on the road to end their season against Kansas State. That game kicks off at Noon ET and will broadcast on FS1.
