Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk looks set to be the next gold jacket-wearing head coach in college football. Reports confirm that Faulk has accepted the head coaching job at Southern University, an HBCU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Faulk, one of the best running backs in NFL history, spent the past season on Deion Sanders' staff at Colorado, serving as the Buffaloes' running backs coach. His move to Southern marks his first head-coaching opportunity and continues the trend of prominent former NFL stars taking leadership roles at HBCU programs. Deion Sanders led the way, going from Jackson State to Colorado. This year saw DeSean Jackson take the head coaching job at Delaware State and Michael Vick take the head coaching job at Norfolk State.

Southern targeted Faulk early in the process, with rumors about his candidacy surfacing a couple of weeks ago. The program is coming off a 1-10 season and relieved its previous coach, Terrance Graves, after a 1-6 start.

For Colorado, the Buffs now need to add a running backs coach to their offseason list, which is likely already filled with several other coaching and personnel changes.
