When you think of SYFY, it's likely that the very first show that comes to mind is Battlestar Galactica. Considering it's a hard science fiction drama that successfully breathed new life into a dead franchise, it makes sense that it would be the network's most popular (and critically acclaimed) drama. But if you're looking for a new SYFY hit that you can stream for free, look no further than the network's 2016 hit Wynonna Earp. Part-Western, part-fantasy, and all-around action-packed, this series outlived its time on SYFY and has found a new audience on the free-to-stream platform Tubi.

Based on the horror Western comic series of the same name by creator Beau Smith (and released through IDW Publishing), former Lost Girl showrunner Emily Andras developed Wynonna Earp into a long-form "Weird Western" series full of supernatural adventure. Set in the present day, the series follows the titular heroine (played by Melanie Scrofano), who just so happens to be the three-times "great" granddaughter of the legendary Wyatt Earp. Wynonna's ancestry gives her an edge over a host of revenants (the reincarnated outlaws that Wyatt once sent straight to Hell) who threaten to drag the world back into further darkness. But Wynonna isn't in this fight alone. By her side is her great-great-great-grandfather's longtime ally and gunslinging partner, Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon), who didn't die of tuberculosis after all. In reality, Doc was saved by a witch who cured his wasting sickness, cursing him with eternal life as a result.
Wielding Wyatt's legendary "Peacemaker," which is able to put these revenants six feet under for good, Wynonna and Doc rise against their own moral failures to hunt down demons and other notorious creatures in the Ghost River Triangle — a supernatural hotspot in the Canadian Rockies that's chock-full of danger. But it's not just Earp and Holliday against the world this time around, as Wynonna and Doc are joined by the former's half-sister Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), Deputy Marshal Xavier Dolls (Shamier Anderson), and Officer Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrell), who stand with the gunslinging heroes against the dark forces that threaten to devour the town of Purgatory. If all of that sounds like a Western-sized blast of supernatural adventure, then the fact that Wynonna Earp ran for four seasons and 49 episodes will be good news to you.

By every measure, this was a pretty perfect finale.
Posts'Wynonna Earp' Concluded on Tubi, Its New Streaming Home
While Wynonna Earp ended in 2021 — running basically the same time on SYFY that its similar contemporary Van Helsing did — that wasn't the end of the supernatural neo-Western. After all, there are always more demons and evil spirits to fight, and Wynonna and company took that to heart. While SYFY had no more interest in continuing Wynonna Earp, the show's success on the Tubi platform brought the project back to life the way that the revenants on the show are — okay, probably not just like that, but you get the picture. In 2024, Tubi released the 90-minute special Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, which picks up after the Season 4 finale and throws the demon-hunting gunslinger gang into a new brand of adventure — one that may not be finished. The whole surviving cast comes back together to tackle their greatest foe, and while it's not necessary viewing, it leaves the door open for more.
"The end of Season 4 was a definitive ending, which was a choice I made because I felt like I could see the writing on the wall," explained Emily Andras to Collider. Yet, Vengeance itself ends in a way where longtime fans still cry out for more. "A movie a year would be amazing," Andras added. "I would absolutely love that." But until Tubi makes another announcement about the continuing future of Wynonna Earp, viewers can find the whole four-season series on the streaming platform, including the Vengeance continuation film. Whether you're interested in seeing Doc Holliday roaming around fighting demons in the present day or you're curious about the whole Peacemarker situation and the Earp line of demon-hunting characters, the truth is that more Weird Westerns are a good thing for the genre — and here's hoping that more Western projects will embrace the high-strangeness out there in the future.
Wynonna Earp is available for streaming on Tubi.
