The last decade has seen some great TV shows come to an end, but unfortunately, not all of them continued that greatness in their final season. Some of the best TV shows of all time ended between 2015 and 2025, and though many had final seasons that lived up to the overall quality of the show, others were a huge disappointment.
There are many reasons why the final season of a show can be disappointing. Some are shorter and thus feel rushed, others make questionable decisions with their characters and their stories, others are nonsensical, and many leave plot holes and questions that won’t be answered anymore. While these bad seasons don’t kill the show, they were definitely disappointing.
House of Cards
House of Cards made history as the first Netflix Original TV show, and though it’s regarded as one of the best drama shows of all time, it crashed in its final season. Based on the 1989 novel of the same name by Michael Dobbs and the 1990 British adaptation, House of Cards is set in Washington, D.C.
The show introduces viewers to Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), an immoral politician and Democrat, and his ambitious wife, Claire Underwood (Robin Wright). House of Cards was a big success, but due to allegations of sexual misconduct against Spacey, Netflix had to rethink the show’s final season.
In the end, Spacey was fired, and House of Cards’ final season carried on without him. Claire Underwood was made the main character of the season, now the President of the United States, and Frank was revealed to have died of a heart attack. While Wright’s performance was praised, the way Spacey’s absence was addressed and the overall story were disappointing.
Killing Eve
Eve and Villanelle wearing coats and walking side by side in the Killing Eve series finale
Killing Eve is a British spy thriller TV series based on Luke Jennings’ Villanelle novel series. Killing Eve follows Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), a British intelligence investigator tasked with capturing Villanelle (Jodie Comer), a psychopathic assassin. However, Eve and Villanelle end up developing a mutual obsession.
Killing Eve had a strong beginning, getting a lot of praise from critics and general audiences, but its fourth and final season was a disappointment. The quality of Killing Eve decreased in its final season, and it only got worse in the final episode, with an unnecessary twist that went against what the show had previously built.
The Umbrella Academy
The Hargreeves siblings heading to rescue Ben and Jennifer in The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Episode 6
Based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy is a superhero comedy-drama TV series. The Umbrella Academy follows the title superhero team, formed by seven adopted siblings, each with unique superpowers.
Scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) adopted them to form the Umbrella Academy team, but as years passed, they went their separate ways and didn’t speak to each other again. The team reunites after Reginald’s passing, and they learn they have to prevent the fast-approaching apocalypse.
The Umbrella Academy mixes superheroes, time travel, a multiverse, and lots of comedy and drama, and it was on its way to a great ending. Unfortunately, its fourth and final season was shorter than its previous ones, leading to a rushed conclusion, many plot holes and unanswered questions, an underwhelming storyline and ending, and an uneven tone.
Supernatural

Supernatural is one of the best fantasy shows of all time, and it built a solid fanbase over the course of 14 seasons, but when the 15th one arrived, it was a massive disappointment. Created by Eric Kripke, Supernatural follows brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), who hunt demons, ghosts, and other supernatural beings.
In the show’s final season, the Winchester brothers, along with Castiel (Misha Collins), battle against God, who then jumpstarts the end of everything. The problem with the final episodes of Supernatural is that the fates of Dean and Sam felt unearned, out of place, and, in the case of Dean’s, ordinary after everything they had gone through.
Game of Thrones
Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in a white coat in Game of Thrones season 8
Game of Thrones quickly became one of the best TV shows of all time, and though it continues to be one of them, it can’t be denied that its final season was one of the biggest disappointments of the decade. Based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, Game of Thrones takes viewers into the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos.
Game of Thrones follows different plotlines that eventually overlap and connect, and it all begins with a war among different families and clans to take the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms. Game of Thrones brings together drama, action, and fantasy, but, unfortunately, its final season made TV history for the worst reasons.
The final season of Game of Thrones was heavily criticized for being rushed, giving unsatisfying conclusions to most of its characters, its questionable plot and character developments, unnecessary twists, and the character who took the Iron Throne being an underwhelming choice.
