Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland Was Allegedly Driving Over 145 MPH During Police Chase, Records Show

New details have emerged about the tragic death of Dallas Cowboys player Marshawn Kneeland. 

According to records and video footage released by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and obtained by The Athletic on Nov. 21, Kneeland, who was 24 when he died in the early morning hours of Nov. 6, the athlete was allegedly driving over 145 miles per hour during the pursuit.

A law enforcement trooper from DPS reportedly began following Kneeland around 10:33 p.m. on Nov. 5 because the NFL player had been traveling at "a high rate of speed" and made "several unsafe lane changes" that evening.

Separate body camera footage obtained by The Athletic revealed another DPS trooper said Kneeland reached 160 mph during the pursuit, and at least one officer was in disbelief that the suspect was a Cowboys player.

According to the outlet, one officer said in the body camera footage, “When I heard who it was, I was like ‘Nah.' "

The trooper reportedly turned on his lights and a siren after Kneeland sped through an intersection, but Kneeland allegedly did not stop for the officer.

After the officer lost sight of Kneeland's car, per the outlet's report, the NFL player's car allegedly hit a truck and crashed in a grassy area near Dallas Parkway and Warren Parkway, where Kneeland allegedly fled on foot.

The unidentified woman driving the truck Kneeland allegedly hit reportedly told a trooper Kneeland "just hit me out of nowhere" and "then he started running." She was not injured in the collision, per The Athletic.

According to the outlet. the police report said an empty holster was discovered inside Kneeland's car.

After Kneeland sent his reported "goodbye" text to friends and family, a trooper said, "Oh that's not good," in body camera footage obtained by the outlet.

Kneeland was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound around 1:30 a.m. local time on Nov. 6 after officers confirmed from a drone that blood was present in a portable restroom near an office building and thermal imaging revealed a body's heat signature on the floor of the space.

After Kneeland's death, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that the late athlete's girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, is pregnant with their first child. "We want to make sure she's taken care of and the baby is taken care of for the rest of their lives," Schottenheimer said during a press conference on Nov. 12.

The Cowboys head coach also shared that the organization has created the Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund, which aims to financially support both Catalina and the couple's baby.

Also on Nov. 12, Mancera broke her silence in a post on Facebook. "My sweet baby, words could never express how broken I feel, you’re my everything. I’ll love you forever my beautiful angel," she wrote, adding a white heart emoji.
