The Houston Astros have gone through a lot of adversity in terms of losing players over the last year. They lost Alex Bregman in free agency last winter and traded Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs during the same offseason.
The Astros seem bound to lose their ace, Framber Valdez, in free agency this winter. Valdez is projected to sign a massive $190 million deal, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic, which would likely be too rich for the Astros to give out.
The Athletic's Andy McCullough recently predicted the San Francisco Giants would be the team to sign Valdez in free agency this winter.
..."The idea of pairing up Valdez, one of the game’s best southpaw sinkerballers, with Logan Webb, the best right-handed sinkerballer, is too good to pass up. The Giants are expected to land one of the major free-agent pitchers this winter. The duo of Valdez and Webb could serve up plenty of grounders for elite fielders Matt Chapman, Willy Adames and others."
The Giants need to make a move for a few stars if they want to close the gap on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.
The Giants' pitching staff isn't quite impressive right now, so adding a star like Valdez at the top of the rotation would be a huge move in the right direction. The move would be expensive, but it's necessary if the Giants are serious about making a run at the World Series over the next few years.
