If there’s one thing that Guy Ritchie knows how to do, it’s craft the perfect gangster heist flick filled with a who’s who cast of the industry’s most recognizable faces. Anyone who loves the genre has a favorite Ritchie flick, whether it be Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, or Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. And, while Ritchie has certainly had some box office bangers over the years, none have spawned quite as solid a following as his 2019 film, The Gentlemen. Not only was the Matthew McConaughey-led production a massive financial hit, but it also led Netflix to pair up with the director and steer it into franchise territory with a scripted series starring Theo James that is now heading towards its second season. If you’re a fan of the small-screen retelling and want to see how it all began, you absolutely must sprint to Tubi before December 1 to watch The Gentlemen completely free of charge.
The film centers around McConaughey’s Mickey Pearson, an American who slings marijuana to make some cash in college. After realizing he can make some serious money from his side hustle, Mickey leaves college behind and becomes a big-time dealer in the game. Eventually, his work carries him to the UK, where he continues to build his empire, but soon decides it’s time to get out of the industry and retire with his wife. Unfortunately, the idea of retirement is a lot easier than the act itself, with his decision setting off a chain of chaotic events.
With frequent collaborators like Jason Statham and Jude Law, Ritchie has a rolodex of stars who love working with him. Filling out the star-studded ensemble of The Gentlemen alongside McConaughey is a lineup that includes Charlie Hunnam, Jeremy Strong, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Eddie Marsan, Michelle Dockery, and Henry Golding.
‘The Gentlemen’s Small Screen Takeover
Five years after Ritchie’s The Gentlemen arrived in cinemas, Netflix invited fans to continue their dive into the world of drugs and crime in a TV series, which dropped its first season in the spring of 2024. A massive hit for the streamer, it was only a few months later before the title was given the green light for a sophomore installment. While no release date has been set, we know that cameras have officially wrapped on the next set of episodes, pointing to just a bit longer of a wait before the action continues for James’ Eddie Horniman and the lovable — yet hopeless — gang of supporting characters.
Head over to Tubi before December 1 to stream The Gentlemen for free.
