Your Amazon account carries a lot of personal information. It can include your order history, payment details, photo library, streaming history on Prime Video and Amazon Music, and more.

If you use weak, easily guessable login credentials for your Amazon account, someone may gain access to it and cause you unnecessary trouble.

So it's always a good idea to secure your account and change or reset your Amazon password from time to time.

Our guide shows you how to change or reset your Amazon password on your desktop, iPhone, or Android phone.

Our guide also explains how to activate 2FA (two-factor authentication) to add an extra layer of security to keep your account secure from prying eyes.

How to change your Amazon password from your phone or computer

Amazon performs a basic 2FA step before it lets you change your old password. Depending on your account settings, it sends a text message (SMS) or an email.

We recommend keeping your phone around when changing your password.

Change your Amazon password on Android or iPhone

Amazon uses a similar user interface on the iOS and Android apps.

We use Amazon for Android in the screenshots below. You can follow the same steps on your iPhone or iPad to reset the password.

  1. Open the Amazon Shopping app.
  2. Tap the Profile button at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap Account. Amazon Shopping app home screen tab showing deals, profile button and shopping card at the bottomShowing Account at the top of the screen next to Buy Again and Lists in the Amazon Shopping appClose
  4. Tap Login & security underneath the Account settings heading. Amazon asks you to sign in with your account details again. Enter the same to proceed.
  5. You'll receive a verification code on your phone or email. Amazon shopping app profile settings screen showing a list of options including login & securityAmazon page to sign in to your account in the Amazon Shopping appClose
  6. Tap the Edit button next to Password. Amazon takes you to the Change Password page.
  7. Enter your current password.
  8. Enter your new password in the password fields. Use a combination of numbers, letters, and special characters for a strong password. You can use your preferred password manager to generate a complex password.
  9. Tap Save changes. Amazon shopping app login & security with edit buttonsAmazon shopping app empty change password fieldsClose
  10. To finish changing your Amazon account's password, verify the action as described above.

That's it. You have successfully changed your Amazon account password. You are all set to use the latest credentials to log in to your account.

If you feel your Amazon account has been compromised, select Start from the Login & Security menu and sign out from all the devices with a single tap.

Changing your password is easy if you still remember it. But what can you do if you can't remember your password and want to catch a sale?

How to reset your Amazon password

If you forgot your Amazon password, you'll need the email address and mobile phone number associated with your account to attempt the reset process.

If you don't have access to either, contact Amazon's customer service to recover your password.

You should also contact Amazon's customer service if you do not receive your password assistance email.

Reset your lost Amazon password on the Amazon app

Due to the Amazon app's security settings, we cannot provide screenshots of all the steps. If you struggle to complete these steps on mobile, try the desktop method.

  1. On the app's login page, tap Forgot password underneath the Need help drop-down menu.
  2. Enter the email address or phone number associated with your account.
  3. Amazon may ask you to enter the postcode or zip code associated with your account to continue.
  4. Tap Continue. Amazon desktop screen sign in pop up windowAmazon password reset customer support windowClose
  5. Amazon sends you a password assistance email. Check the email for your one-time password (OTP). This takes the form of a six-digit code.

  6. You now have access to your Amazon account.

After sorting out your passwords, you may want to improve the security of your Amazon account.

A password manager keeps your passwords secure, and two-factor authentication makes it nearly impossible for remote hackers to access your account.

Keep your Amazon login secure with two-factor authentication

Changing your Amazon password is an effective way to secure your account, but you'll still deal with the flaws that come with passwords.

Activating two-factor authentication (2FA) is the simplest and most effective way to improve your account security. Activating 2FA requires a lesser-known external app like Google Authenticator or Authy to use.

When activated, you must verify every login to your Amazon account by manually approving it through the app.

Strong passwords aren't foolproof. So this is an excellent method to keep your account secure, as bad actors need access to your phone to do anything.

After choosing your preferred 2FA app, follow the steps below to add 2FA to your account.

Amazon refers to this method as "Two-step verification." This is another name for two-factor authentication.

  1. Open the Amazon mobile app and go to Login & security underneath the Account settings heading (refer to the steps above).
  2. Tap Edit next to Two-Step Verification Settings. Amazon shopping app profile settings screen showing a list of options including login & securityAmazon shopping app login & security with edit buttonsClose
  3. Tap Get Started.
  4. Tap the radio button next to Authenticator app. You can verify via SMS, but this is not as secure as using an external app. amazon shopping app two step verification settings with the get started buttonAdding a 2sv authentication app in the Amazon shopping app Close
  5. Copy the text code into your two-factor authentication app. If you're setting up 2FA on your desktop, scan the QR code provided on your phone.
  6. Copy the OTP in the 2FA app into the field provided. Amazon shopping app screen showing QR code for two factor authentication appsClose

A good password manager is a solid idea

Changing your Amazon password regularly and activating two-factor authentication keep your account as secure as possible. However, if you're worried about forgetting your password, use a secure password manager.

If all else fails, consider setting up passkeys as an alternative to a password for logging in to Amazon.
