That was the sentiment anime fans had after Toei Animation released HD remasters of One Piece on Netflix. Unfortunately, not everyone was keen on the new changes, with fans claiming that it made their favorite show lose the quality that made it appealing in the first place.
According to fans on social media, they were concerned that the episodes had been cropped to fit the new aspect ratio. They claimed that the HD remakes made the classic '90s episodes look flat and lose their nostalgic touch. One commenter worried that what Toei did would be similar to a 2019 Disney+ stunt in which it cropped some classic episodes of The Simpsons to fit the new aspect ratio. In doing so, it removed some visual gags. But the cropped visuals aren't the only thing that upset fans. There were also allegations that the HD remake upscaled the visuals with AI, which made the episodes lose that grain and quality.
On November 15, Toei Animation released the first 16 episodes of the original One Piece anime with this new remastered format, with plans to release another batch of 16 episodes in December 2025 and January 2026. Unfortunately, there are no settings to restore it to the original 4:3 aspect ratio. The One Piece widescreen issue has been a gripe amongst anime fans for quite some time. Before the HD Remake was released, some regions, including the U.S., were forced to watch the anime in cropped versions, prompting fans to watch One Piece on other platforms like Crunchyroll.
'One Piece' Is Getting A Remake by 'Spy x Family's Studio.
In 2024, it was announced that One Piece is getting a remake and will be produced by WIT Studios, with Netflix releasing a video showcasing a glimpse of how Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates would look in this new adaptation of the ongoing manga series by Eiichiro Oda. A release date for this remake has yet to be announced, and the studio has promised that this new version of One Piece will remain faithful to the source material. Game Rant reported that WIT Studio's president, George Wada, released a statement explaining why this project was greenlit, citing that the old 4:3 ratio might have been "off-putting to viewers" and that the current anime has over 1,000 episodes, which could be turning off potential new fans.
The One Piece anime has been ongoing since 1999, two years after the original manga was released. The show is currently in its 21st season, and recently, Toei Animation announced that it will make a major change to the show's production next year. It's going to shift into a seasonal production model, releasing a maximum of 26 episodes per year.
Both the One Piece anime and live-action adaptation are available to stream on Netflix.
