Makuochi Echebiri is a News Writer for Collider. He has been interested in creative writing from as far back as high school, and he would consume pretty much anything that’s film or TV. However, his truest love lies in the presence of historical epics and thrillers.
Lured by the brilliance of Middle Earth from an early age both in print and on screen, his palate has since expanded to other realms including Westeros, Kattegat among others. He also possesses a great appetite for the stories that emanate from the vastness of space. Even though he is no Avenger.
Obsessed with storytelling and having works of his own that have yet to make it to print, he is content to use that ability to communicate to as many as are reachable. In his spare time, he looks out for avenues where he can aid people aside from his plans to reign over this earthly realm. Yes…you heard that first here.

There is a strong argument to be made for the original Avatar: The Last Airbender being one of the greatest animated series ever made with its impactful and engaging storyline from start to finish. The original series has since inspired several adaptations. The notorious M. Night Shyamalan-directed film version has since given way to Netflix's live-action adaptation, which has been far more well-received. The series brought several of our favorite heroes back, one of them being Uncle Iroh, with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee taking on the beloved role. However, before Lee took on the role, voice star Greg Baldwin had voiced the character in the original series after taking over from original star Mako, who passed away in 2006.
Lee delivered an endearing portrayal of Uncle Iroh, but fans of the original are sure to continually remember Baldwin quite fondly. During an appearance on the latest episode of the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, Baldwin discussed the prequel story he would like to see told. Avatar: The Last Airbender had several threads that could be pulled upon to further explore the story of our heroes, but Baldwin is leaning in a slightly different direction, saying:
"People are always talking about Zuko's redemption arc, right? And you know the redemption arc I would like to see more than any other -- I would like to see Ozai's redemption arc. Because to take the most powerful man in the world, and put him into a world without power. If anything's going to humble him it's going to be that, you know. That would be something I'd be interested in seeing."
The feared and revered Fire Lord Ozai ruled the Fire Nation for a large portion of Avatar: The Last Airbender, leading the firebenders in their war for global domination. The character was voiced by Mark Hamill in the animated series with Daniel Dae Kim taking on the role in Netflix's live-action series. In the original run, Ozai scared his own son, Zuko, and set him on a quest to capture the Avatar which would ultimately see him embark on a redemption arc of his own. Phoenix King Ozai would see his villainous reign ended when he clashed with Avatar Aang at the end of the series, with his bending taken away and him being imprisoned. While an Ozai redemption arc would be great, what about Iroh's own fabled redemption arc, which was mentioned in Avatar: The Last Airbender yet never seen? Would Baldwin like to see that play out on the small screen? "I'd like to see him when he's not so nice," Baldwin stated.
The Legacy of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Continues To Grow and Expand
While it remains to be seen if Baldwin's idea will be picked up, fans of the franchise can continue to look forward to the second season of Netflix's live-action series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. The series will return with the Gaang coming back together with Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio), Sokka (Ian Ousley), and Prince Zuko (Dallas Kim) continuing their quest to defeat the Fire Lord Ozai and the Fire Nation.
Seasons 2 and 3 of the live-action series is confirmed to be in the works, but it is not the only Aang-related project on the table. Beyond the Netflix show, a new feature film spin-off titled The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender is set to release in 2026, with Dave Bautista and Steven Yeun set to star. There is also an expansion of the timeline in the works with a brand-new upcoming series, Avatar: Seven Havens. The project will follow a new hero in a post-apocalyptic landscape.
Netflix has not yet announced a release window for Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
