All seasons of a ‘gritty’ teen drama that is currently being rebooted is now streaming on Netflix.

First airing in 2003, One Tree Hill was created by Mark Schwahn. Set in the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, it initially followed the lives of two half-brothers, Lucas (played by Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (played by James Lafferty), who compete for positions on their school’s basketball team and face drama from their respective romantic relationships.

The supporting cast also included Hilarie Burton, Bethany Joy Lenz, Paul Johansson and Sophia Bush.

The series went on to run for a total of nine seasons, eventually wrapping up in 2012.

The first four season followed the main characters throughout their high school years growing up in a small town, before the story then jumped four years to show their lives after college.

In the years since One Tree Hill ended, the show has been singled out by several publications including Cosmopolitan and Entertainment Weekly as one of the greatest teen dramas of all time, also drawing comparisons to The O.C. and Dawson’s Creek.

Many also said it had a more masculine appeal, with PopMatters writing at the time that it initially premiered: ‘Where Dawson’s was about relationships, especially between boys and girls, One Tree Hill tries to be about masculinity, especially as negotiated through sports.’

‘This doesn’t mean boys won’t watch it, just that they won’t talk about it,’ they added.

Meanwhile The Wall Street Journal called it ‘a slick prime-time drama about a small town packed with hunky teenagers and simmering family secrets’.

Sharing their opinions on the show on online review sites, many viewers also said they’d been ‘hooked’.

‘Man, since I landed my eyes to the pilot of this show, I couldn’t take it away from my TV set waiting for the next episode. This show is probably one of the best high school drama I’ve ever watched,’ user anastasiaveno posted on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘This is my favourite series of all time!!! I can never get enough of it. I love it. Would recommend it to anybody! There’s drama, thriller, romance & so much more!! Watch it!!!’ kecksxo shared.

‘The characters are so real, so raw and you feel like you know them, as if they are your friends. Seriously amazed of how it manages to suck you into their world, without ever living,’ andreagonzaleza wrote.

‘It’s an “old” show but really, you won’t be disappointed after watching a few episodes. Give it a try! For me it will always be a timeless show! Those that stick to your heart and leave a mark forever,’ she added.

This week the entire series was added onto Netflix, where UK viewers can now re-watch the old favourite or dive in and binge all episodes for the first time.

Soon after the streaming service shared a post on socials reminding subscribers, with many overjoyed. ‘So excited about this!!! Can’t wait to binge watch all over again!’ Jenny commented. ‘I remember watching this years ago. It was a great series,’ Leanne shared. ‘Yay! I’ve had the DVDs for years but now I can watch whenever,’ Rebecca added.

The upload also comes following news that One Tree Hill is being rebooted – with some of the original cast members also set to feature.

In August 2024 it was announced that the streaming service was working on bringing the show back, with the sequel series set to take place 20 years later, following best friends Brooke Davis (Sophia) and Peyton Sawyer (Hilarie), who are now parents of teens and facing challenges ‘not unlike those they tackled in the original series, such as love, insecurities, and grief’ according to Deadline, who broke the news.

Soon after Hilarie confirmed the show was coming back – writing on Instagram: ‘What if you really can go back home? If there’s an opportunity to team with brilliant creatives and build a space where all our friends can show off their talents? Own our history? Reclaim our turf? Honour our fans?

‘There’s only one Tree Hill, after all. And you — the #OTHfam — have shown us that it’s not just an idea. It really is the place where “everything’s better and everything’s safe”.’

Meanwhile last year Austin Nichols – who played Julian Baker – shared his thoughts on the show finding a new life, and a generation of new fans, on streaming.

‘A whole new generation found it,’ he told People. ‘And you’re suddenly going, “Oh, there’s something that is really connecting with people”. It did, and it still is. It made us realise that it was something. I think we appreciate it more later because sometimes, when you’re on it, you don’t really know what you have.’
