The Boston Red Sox made their first major move of the offseason, trading for St. Louis Cardinals star pitcher Sonny Gray, but don't expect this to be their last big move this winter.
The Red Sox took a big step forward this offseason, reaching the postseason for the first time since 2021, and will look to build on that momentum heading into next season. Boston has plenty of talented young players under contract and a bona fide ace in Garrett Crochet, but it has a couple of areas to improve in this offseason.
Trading for Gray got the Red Sox the No. 2 starting pitcher to pair with Crochet that they've been pursuing since the trade deadline, but another position they need to address is first base. Triston Casas was set to be Boston's first baseman of the future, but injuries and poor play has left his future with the team uncertain.
...Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer listed the Red Sox as a “perfect fit” to sign New York Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso in free agency this offseason.
"Even with Alex Bregman at third base, the Red Sox didn't pose much of a threat from the right side of the plate this season," Rymer wrote Tuesday. "This is where Pete Alonso would come in. With Alonso at first base, the Red Sox would have license to shift Triston Casas to designated hitter. It's the best spot for him, as he's a bad defender who needs as many advantages as he can get if he's going to finally stay healthy.
..."The Red Sox are $40 million in average annual value below the 2026 luxury-tax threshold, so they should be able to afford a nine-figure deal with Alonso. And the buzz is already there, as Jon Morosi of MLB Network labeled the Red Sox as 'the strongest contender of anyone' to sign him away from the Mets."
Alonso is a five-time All-Star and one of the best pure sluggers in baseball. The 30-year-old has spent all seven seasons of his career with the Mets, but after opting out of his contract, is in search of a long-term deal this offseason.
Alonso has mashed 34 or more home runs in every season of his career besides the shortened 2020 season, and would provide the Red Sox's lineup with a right-handed power hitter who can change a game with a single swing.
