If you're a huge Red Dead Redemption fan and have been looking for a quality RPG that scratches the same itch, there's a brand-new indie RPG that incorporates simulation elements similar to Valheim, but in a wild west setting.
Cowboy Life Simulator (via Steam) is a new RPG set during the western frontier from indie development team Odd Qubit, featuring immersive life-sim elements and compelling wild-west-inspired characters and storylines, available now in early access. Cowboy Life Simulator lets players "build your dream ranch ... [stepping] into the boots of a failed businessman starting fresh on the frontier."
Red Dead Redemption 3 Be Damned
Cowboy Life Simulator incorporates immersive life-simulation elements such as gardening, crafting, farming, animal care-taking, etc., through the eyes of a new resident of the small western town of Bravestand. Players can build relationships with other residents, who all have their own unique habits and traits, learning the history of the town and helping to solve its various problems.
Cowboy Life Simulator also features a massive open-world environment ripe for exploration, with hidden secrets, abandoned mines, etc., with light survival mechanics included as well. The game also has a rich combat system, with multiple weapons and upgrades, and a "sophisticated progression" system.
If you've been waiting patiently for Red Dead Redemption 3 and need something to fill the void, Cowboy Life Simulator might just be the RPG you've been looking for. There's a ton of content included with Early Access to the game, and it's currently at a discount on Steam until December 10.

The cowboy simulation elements combined with the deep RPG progression systems will scratch that Red Dead Redemption itch in many ways, not to mention the game's open-world exploration and compelling NPCs around town.
Ultimately, Cowboy Life Simulator is yet another great indie game released in 2025 that's well worth a shot, and fans of Red Dead Redemption or Valheim will definitely appreciate the game's take on the western and simulation genres.
