A historic relic from the “wedding of the century” is set to go up for auction next month and its rarity is matched by its price.

An magnum of Dom Pérignon Vintage 1961, specially produced for the royal wedding of the Prince of Wales (now King Charles III) and the late Princess Diana is scheduled to go under the hammer at Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen on December 11.

The bottle, fitted with a unique label acknowledging its release to commemorate the wedding, is estimated will fetch between 500,000–600,000 DKK ($76,500–$92,300).

“Vintage 1961 is one of Dom Pérignon’s most coveted vintages," said Thomas Rosendahl, the Head of the Wine Department at Bruun Rasmussen said in a statement.

“This special edition was produced in extremely limited numbers and exclusively for the official festivities and selected guests of the royal wedding.”

The wedding itself was held on 29 July 1981 in Saint Paul’s Cathedral, in London, followed by a lavish reception at Buckingham Palace, the official residence for British monarchs.

After separating in 1992, the royal couple later finalized their divorce in August 1996, one year before Princess Diana tragically passed in a car accident in Paris, while being chased by paparazzi.

According to Rosendahl, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for wine connoisseurs and royal collectors to buy an extremely rare piece of history.

“This is a champagne created for a historic royal occasion, making it extraordinarily rare. It represents not only a highly esteemed Dom Pérignon vintage but also a unique piece of cultural history.

“We expect strong international interest from both established wine collectors and royal memorabilia enthusiasts,” he said.

In 2021, a piece of cake from Princess Diana’s wedding was sold at auction in England, for an “unexpected” price of £1,850 ($2,565).

The 28-ounce slice originating from one of the 23 cakes made for the celebration, was initially expected to sell for only £300–£500 ($416–$693), but then bidding interest surged ahead of the sale.

The iconic slice of cake featured a coat-of-arms colored in gold, red, blue and silver, a silver horseshoe and leaf spray, as well as some white decorative icing.
