HBO Is Officially Fixing Game Of Thrones Season 8 & The Show's Biggest Mistake Can Be Corrected

After sequel updates, Game of Thrones season 8 could finally be fixed by HBO, but that would only happen if a major storyline were updated.

Game of Thrones season 8 is one of the most criticized entries in TV history, but it seems like HBO is working on a way to fix that, and the show needs a major character to return to fix its most egregious mistake. Game of Thrones sits on the table of the most popular TV shows of all time.

The series dominated pop culture discourse for nearly a decade. However, after Game of Thrones season 8's ending was disappointing, with the whole final batch of episodes riddled with issues, the show is but a shadow of what it once was. Thankfully, a prequel has managed to get excitement up again, and it seems HBO has bigger plans in store.

The Game Of Thrones Franchise Will Grow Beyond Just Prequels

House of the Dragon has become a major hit for HBO, with the show recently renewed for season 4. In 2026, another Game of Thrones prequel will be released, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms also renewed for season 2. While those shows are exciting, they do not fix Game of Thrones season 8's issues, but something else could.

At the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival, author George R.R. Martin revealed that HBO is developing at least one Game of Thrones sequel series. According to Martin, "There's a sequel or two" in development alongside what he claims to be another five or six prequel series. This is not the first time that we have heard about a Game of Thrones sequel.

It has been confirmed that Kit Harington had been working on bringing back one of Game of Thrones' main characters, Jon Snow, in a sequel series that would have explored his life after heading north of the Wall in the series finale. While Harington stated the show was not moving forward, HBO boss Casey Bloys said the Jon Snow spinoff could return later.

HBO Needs To Find A Way To Bring Back The Night King To Fix Game Of Thrones Season 8

Based on Bloys leaving the door open for the Jon Snow sequel series, saying, "Maybe we'll try again," as well as George R. R. Martin's reveal that Game of Thrones sequels are in development, I'm holding out hope that one of those shows is the Jon Snow project. It would be the perfect series to help fix Game of Thrones season 8.

After all, Jon Snow was Game of Thrones' main character alongside Emilia Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen. His ending, like that of most characters in Game of Thrones season 8, was not received positively by fans. Jon deserved more than being exiled after everything he had done to save Westeros. A sequel series could fix that and a major season 8 villain problem.

The Night King is one of Game of Thrones' most iconic characters. The HBO series built a major connection between him and Jon throughout the show. However, fans never got to see the final showdown between them, given that Arya Stark was the one to kill the Night King with a surprise blow.

As such, one of the show's biggest villains died in a badly lit episode — it was too dark to see most of what happened at Winterfell — and we never got to see his rivalry with Jon Snow reach its boiling point.

There are many theories about how the Night King could return, and with Game of Thrones' magical elements, a Jon Snow sequel that sees them battle is perfect for it, fixing multiple season 8 mistakes at the same time. Whether that could happen remains to be seen, but Jon Snow and the Night King's return would help fix Game of Thrones season 8 without remaking it.
