Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek: Voyager: Homecoming #3!
Star Trek’s worst change to the Borg is now officially a part of franchise canon. The Borg were one of Star Trek’s most powerful alien races, assimilating civilizations into their Collective and robbing them of their humanity. Yet even the Borg’s power has limits, and in Star Trek: Voyager: Homecoming #3, the franchise doubles down on one weakness.
Star Trek: Voyager: Homecoming #3 was written by Susan Bridges and Tilly Bridges and drawn by Angel Hernandez. Adrift in Fluidic Space, home of Species 8472, Voyager discovers the wreck of a Borg cube.
Star Trek Borg Weakness
The Borg aboard the derelict inform the ship they cannot rest and restore themselves in Fluidic Space, nor can they assimilate someone.
The Borg Were the Top of the Star Trek Heap, But They Eventually Met Their Match
Species 8472 Were Unlike Any Other Star Trek Race Before Them

Introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s second season as a replacement for the disappointing Feregni, the Borg became one of the franchise’s most popular bad guys. Vastly different than anything the Federation had encountered before, the Borg struck fear into the hearts of even the Klingons and the Romulans.
Yet as seen in Star Trek: Voyager’s season three finale, “Scorpion Part One,” the Borg finally met their match. After attempting, and failing, to assimilate the mysterious Speies 8472, the Borg found themselves at war with the aliens. The fighting spilled over into our universe, and only with Voyager’s assistance were the Borg able to defeat 8472.
Now, in Star Trek: Voyager: Homecoming, released to commemorate the show’s 30th anniversary, Species 8472 has returned. They have broken their agreement with Janeway and seek to destroy all life in the galaxy. Species 8472 has commandeered Voyager and brought it to their realm, and the crew needs to find a way home, and quickly.
Species 8472 Cannot Be Assimilated, Making Them the Ultimate Threat to the Borg
Even Species 8472's Home Dimension is Dangerous to the Borg
Voyager’s salvation came in the form of a Borg ship. Having been severed from the Collective for so long, these Borg are slowly becoming more individualistic and developing their own way of conducting business. Voyager’s crew is understandably worried about being assimilated, but the Borg inform they are unable to, thanks to the peculiarities of Fluidic Space.
Star Trek canon has already established that Species 8472 were impossible to assimilate, thanks to their unique genetic structure. Fluidic Space is an “organic” dimension where everything, from the starships to the planets, is alive. Something about Fluidic Space also hampers the Borg’s abilities to heal and assimilate others, making them considerably less of a threat.
The issue does not dwell too much on what exactly it is about Fluidic Space that negates the Borg’s abilities. The organic nature of the dimension could be the culprit. Species 8472’ DNA has given the Borg headaches trying to assimilate it, and perhaps they can even hinder the Collective’s own innate powers and abilities without being nowhere around.
Star Trek Fans Were Disappointed With Changes to the Borg
Star Trek's Borg Revisions Made the Collective More Interesting
Star Trek First Contact Borg
Star Trek’s revisions to Borg lore have been controversial. Some feel the Borg have lost their luster, thanks in part to their nerfing at the hands of Species 8472. Others see the Borg as being overdone. Whatever their reason, these changes to the Borg are now officially part of Star Trek canon.
Star Trek: Voyager: Homecoming #3 is on sale now from IDW Publishing!
