It seems as though the Philadelphia Phillies are going to cut ties with starting pitcher Ranger Suárez in free agency. The Phillies have plenty of pitchers on their roster, as well as a star prospect on the rise. Pair that with the fact that Suárez is projected to sign a huge $164 million deal, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic.
There are bound to be a lot of teams in the sweepstakes for Suárez because he's one of the best pitchers on the market this winter.
Andy McCullough of The Athletic recently predicted Suárez would bolt from the Phillies and sign a huge deal with the Houston Astros.
..."Suárez lacks elite fastball velocity and he tends to top out around 150 innings each season. But those 150 innings are usually pretty excellent. He has produced a 3.59 ERA since 2022 while averaging 26 starts per season," McCullough wrote. "He excels at missing barrels and producing weak contact. He is more of a craftsman than a flamethrower, which is the sort of pitching profile that ages well. And the Astros, as always, intend to contend and will be looking for someone to replace Framber Valdez."
The Astros are set to lose Framber Valdez this offseason, and they're going to need to replace him with a star in free agency.
Suárez is the perfect option to replace Valdez, and he might be signed for slightly cheaper. The Astros need to make some moves to get back to the postseason after a disappointing season. They can't afford to lose Valdez without replacing him. Suárez should be their top priority on the pitching market this offseason.
