By Maria Azzurra VolpeShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberEva Green has officially joined Netflix's smash hit, Wednesday—and fans have praised the “perfect” casting choice on social media.
Last night, the streaming platform confirmed the French actor would be joining season 3 of the comedy horror TV series as Wednesday’s psychic aunt, Ophelia, Morticia Addams’s long-missing sister, sending fans into a goth frenzy.
Indeed, throughout her career Green has established a reputation as one of Hollywood’s leading goth icons, thanks to not only her distinctive, darkly glamorous personal style but volume of unsettling artistic projects.
The announcement came after season 2’s chilling finale, which revealed that aunt Ophelia, was actually alive and being prisoner in her mother Hester Frump's basement, where she could be seen scrawling with blood on the wall “Wednesday must die”.
This will be fourth time Green collaborates with Wednesday’s director, Tim Burton, having previously acted in 2012’s Dark Shadows, 2016’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and 2019’s Dumbo.
...Here are her seven most haunting roles:
Dark Shadows (2012)
In this gothic horror comedy set in 18th-century Maine, Green plays the role of Angelique Bouchard, a powerful witch whose love turns into vengeance.
When her heart is broken by the charming playboy Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp), Angelique curses him by turning him into a vampire and having him buried alive.
Two hundred years later, Barnabas escapes into the world of 1972, only to discover that his once-magnificent home is in ruins and his family has fallen apart.
Penny Dreadful (2014 – 2016)
Set in the eerie streets of Victorian London, horror drama series Penny Dreadful features Green as Vanessa Ives, a troubled but powerful clairvoyant, working alongside Sir Malcolm, an explorer driven to find his missing daughter.
Vanessa helps form an unlikely team that includes American sharpshooter Ethan Chandler and other characters drawn from classic literature, such as Dr. Frankenstein and Dorian Gray.
Camelot (2011)
In this history drama, Green plays Morgan, the ambitious half-sister of Arthur.
After the sudden death of King Uther plunges Britain into instability, Merlin places Uther’s hidden son Arthur—raised as a commoner—on the throne.
Morgan, however, rejects Arthur’s claim and works against him, using both political influence and supernatural means to pursue the crown for herself.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)
In Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Green plays Miss Peregrine, the headmistress of a hidden school that protects children with unusual abilities.
After Jake follows clues left by his grandfather, he discovers Miss Peregrine’s time-looped home and meets the peculiar children she safeguards. As Jake learns more about their abilities and the dangerous creatures hunting them, Miss Peregrine becomes his guide into this strange world.
The story follows Jake as he uncovers his own peculiarity, which becomes essential to helping Miss Peregrine and her students survive.
Sin City: A dame to kills for (2014)
In Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Green plays Ava Lord, the seductive and manipulative woman at the center of one of the film’s main storylines.
Private detective Dwight McCarthy, her former lover, is drawn back into her life when she contacts him claiming she is being abused and fears for her life – but really, she only uses him to eliminate her wealthy husband and his associates.
Dwight soon discovers that Ava plotted everything to regain control, and surviving her attempt to kill him, he teams up with allies in Old Town to take revenge.
Franklyn (2008)
In this cryptic fantasy thriller, Green plays Emilia, a depressed young woman from London who expresses her pain through extreme and unusual performance art.
Her story runs alongside other characters, including a heartbroken man looking for love and a father searching for his missing son. At the same time, the film shows a futuristic city where a masked vigilante seeks revenge.
Womb (2010)
In this science fiction drama, Green plays Rebecca, a woman whose childhood love, Tommy, dies in a car accident after they are reunited as adults.
Heartbroken after his death, Rebecca makes the controversial decision to bear Tommy’s clone so she can be with him again.
As the clone grows into a young man who looks exactly like her lost love, Rebecca struggles with the emotional and ethical challenges of her choice.
