NFL football has been played on Thanksgiving Day for more than a century, but only one team can hold the mantle as the holiday's most decorated.

Naturally, most of the Thanksgiving records belong to its two perennial hosts – the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. It was Detroit that began the franchise's yearly tradition of hosting a Thanksgiving game as the brainchild of George A. Richards in 1934 while Dallas played copycat starting in 1966.

While those two franchises have remained Turkey Day staples and have often grappled with one another for the holiday's glory, the NFL has, in recent seasons, added a third game to Thanksgiving slate. That has given more NFL teams an opportunity to test their mettle on the holiday and spread the wealth around somewhat more evenly.

But which team has played and won the most on Thanksgiving Day? Here's what to know about the all-time records of all 32 NFL teams during the league's marquee holiday.

What NFL team has played the most Thanksgiving Day games?

The Lions have played an NFL-high 85 Thanksgiving games over the course of their team's existence. Detroit has posted a record of 38-45-2 in those games.

Detroit began its tradition of playing regularly on Thanksgiving Day in 1934. The franchise has hosted games on the holiday uninterrupted since 1945, with the only break since its first Thanksgiving game coming from 1939-44 during World War II.

The NFL doesn't seem interested in breaking the Lions' Thanksgiving tradition any time soon, so they should remain Turkey Day's most featured team in perpetuity.

Which team has the most wins on Thanksgiving?

The Lions have won an NFL-best 38 games on Thanksgiving, four better than the second-place Dallas Cowboys. However, the Lions also have a league-worst 45 losses on the holiday, more than double the total of any other team entering the holiday in 2025 (the Cowboys have 22 losses).

The Lions snapped a six-game losing streak on Thanksgiving in 2024 with a 23-20 win over the Chicago Bears. Dan Campbell's squad will be looking to build a multi-year winning streak in 2025 for the first time since the team won four straight from 2013-16.
