Joe Gomez must return
Liverpool are without a senior right-back at the moment. Both Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong are out injured, which led to Dominik Szoboszlai starting in the role against Forest, much as he did in matches earlier this campaign.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThat shouldn’t happen again. Szoboszlai has been arguably Liverpool’s most consistent player this season, playing across different roles and consistently delivering.
But they need him in the middle of the pitch. Not only that, but the midfield is Liverpool’s strength right now as the only area that isn’t battling injuries.
Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Curtis Jones are all available. Slot should make use of that, playing two or three of them and utilising another pair from the bench. It’s the only solidity Liverpool have.
That means taking a gamble at right-back, though. Of course, the injuries mean Slot needs to take one regardless, be it through an inexperienced option or playing someone out of position.

But he’s needed at right-back against PSV. It’s the only way Liverpool can have a player out there who’s comfortable while not disrupting the midfield options.
Slot rarely turns to Gomez for whatever reason but there’s no other option here that actually looks solid. Get Gomez in at right-back, keep the midfielders central, and Liverpool might have something to build on.
