Santorini dazzles with cliffs, unforgettable architecture, sunsets and quick UK access (Picture: Getty Images)
Know those screensavers showing whitewashed houses perched on cliffs overlooking shimmering turquoise waters? They’re almost certainly taken in Santorini!
Considered one of the finest of the 6,000 or so Greek islands, Santorini is justly famous for idyllic coastal scenery, volcanic sand beaches and spectacular sunsets.
The city of Fira is thronging with clifftop cafes and bars, alongside plenty of hostels offering beds at reasonable prices, making it an easy base for exploring the island.
While some venues close over winter, it’s still a great time to visit, with far fewer crowds and mild weather. And given direct flights from the UK can take less than four hours, you’ll be there in a flash!
New York, USA
New York captivates with icons, budget eats and frequent flights (Picture: Getty Images)
New York, New York… The Big Apple barely needs an introduction.
The best way to explore the city is on foot: the grid layout makes it easy to navigate, and you can fit plenty into a single day.
Start from Central Park and make your way down to Battery Park, taking in highlights like Times Square, the Empire State Building and Wall Street.
Grabbing lunch from a food truck or a dollar pizza store is a great way to keep costs down. And rather than paying for a river cruise, why not enjoy stunning views of the Manhattan skyline from the free Staten Island Ferry?
Fortunately, London to New York is one of the world’s busiest long-haul flight routes, so there are lots of affordable tickets on offer.
Split, Croatia
Split mixes a lively atmosphere, sunny cafés, and the stunning Diocletian Palace (Picture: Getty Images)
Croatia’s second-largest city is one of those places that manages to combine buckets of fun with incredible culture.
It’s justly famous for its vibrant social scene, which ranges from lively beach cafes to more chilled spots like jazz bars and microbreweries. With so much choice, an organised pub crawl is a good first-night option to pick up some local knowledge to inform the rest of the trip.
Split has an equally thriving cafe culture, while reliably sunny weather means you can sit outside for most of the year (with Riva seafront promenade a particularly sought-after spot).
Be sure to make time for the city’s top cultural attraction – the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Astonishingly well preserved, it takes in the whole of Split’s old town! You don’t need to be a history buff to find it fascinating.

Marrakesh, Morocco
Marrakesh brims with vivid souks, energetic performers, and unforgettable sunrises (Picture: Getty Images)
There’s a reason Marrakesh features in countless films – the city is a feast for the senses, with life, colour and history at every turn.
Take the pulse of the city at the bustling flea market of Bab el-Khemis (a great spot for bargains!), or by heading to the Jemaa el-Fnaa square to watch street performers, dancers and dervishes thrill passers-by.
Although Marrakesh is one of Morocco’s most atmospheric cities, it only has a handful of licensed venues, so it’s worth heading to the modernist neighbourhood of Gueliz if you’re after a wider selection of bars.
If you can bear it, a dawn ride in a hot air balloon is well worth the effort, with the sight of the sun rising over the Atlas Mountains creating a truly breathtaking spectacle.
Hanoi, Vietnam
Energetic Hanoi’s Old Quarter buzzes with food, culture, and nightlife (Picture: Getty Images)
Vast, energetic and just a little chaotic, Hanoi is one of those cities that immediately draws you in.
A highlight is the Old Quarter, which is easily walkable and packed with things to do, from browsing shops and markets to popping into a café to enjoy a cup of cà phê trứng (egg coffee).
There’s plenty happening on the nightlife front too, which is centred on Ta Hien – better known to western visitors as Beer Street!
And did someone say pho? Hanoi is arguably the best place in the world to sample this wildly popular (and Instagrammable!) noodle soup – among a hundred and one other mouth-watering dishes served up by the city’s street food sellers.
Flight prices vary, of course, but we’re seeing plenty of return tickets for under £800.
Almeria, Spain
Sun-soaked Almeria blends Moorish charm, quiet beaches, and late-night tapas (Picture: Getty Images)
Southern Spain is very much on the tourist map, but some destinations have still managed to stay under the radar.
Almeria in Andalucía is a city of sun-drenched plazas, beautiful Moorish buildings and lively local markets – all just a short walk from sandy beaches.
The city also happens to be one of the warmest and driest places in Spain – a major attraction during a chilly British winter!
Admittedly, this is one of the more relaxed destinations we’ve mentioned. But being in Spain, restaurants and bars stay open late, meaning plenty of opportunities to graze on delicious tapas long into the night.
*Prize draw is open to existing tobacco or nicotine users aged 18+ and UK residents only. No purchase necessary to enter. One winner will be chosen at random to win 1x £1,000 flight voucher. Prize draw closes at 11.59pm on 17.12.2025. Winners will be contacted by DM 11:00am on 18.12.2025. Link to the full T&Cs here.
