By Lydia PatrickShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe size of a 9-month-old puppy has shocked the internet as viewers reacted to just how large one young German shepherd crossed with a Great Pyrenees has already become.
The dog mom, Sara Ann (@thesaraann), shared a video of the pup climbing on her, and the clip quickly took off online, garnering 17,000 likes and 171,900 views on TikTok.
"What it's like when you and your 9-month-old puppy are the same size," she wrote as the text overlaying the video.
In the clip, the big pup excitedly climbs onto his mom’s back, playfully pawing and nibbling as she laughs at his overwhelming affection.

While it might surprise some viewers to see a puppy this large, it’s actually typical for the breed. According to the American Kennel Club, German shepherds are a large, agile, muscular breed known for their intelligence, loyalty and confident temperament. Males often reach 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder when fully grown, with females only slightly smaller—meaning even at nine months, many are already close to adult size.
The Great Pyrenees is a large, thickly-coated, and immensely powerful working dog originally bred to guard livestock on the snowy peaks of the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. With a calm yet vigilant temperament, the breed is known for its protective nature as well as its loyalty and gentleness toward family.
That guarding instinct is still part of the breed’s makeup today—so when a Puppy X (German Shepherd × Great Pyrenees) starts scaling their human’s back, it’s a reminder not only of size—but of a guardian’s ease with assuming physical control.
TikTok users quickly jumped into the comments with humor, concern and plenty of relatable dog-owner anecdotes. One viewer warned: "You better get that in check because German shepherds are known for that. He’s showing his dominance over you. You’ll never be the boss that way."
...Another joked from the dog’s perspective: "Don’t forget, i’m still growing, imma be bigger than you soon pipsqueak."
Someone else added: "Mine is almost three years old. The face punches never stop," while another simply asked: "Why is he jumping you." One commenter sympathized, saying: "They are insane at this age like my poor poodle girl is overrrr it," and another viewer compared the moment to sibling chaos, writing: "That’s like the older sibling hurting the younger sibling and the older one screaming 'DONT TELL MOM.'"
The behavior seen in the video may look chaotic, but it’s common for young German shepherds, who are known for being energetic, strong and extremely interactive with their owners.
The AKC notes that the breed thrives with early training and lots of physical and mental stimulation—otherwise, their natural enthusiasm can show up in the form of climbing, pawing or intense play, much like what viewers saw in Sara Ann’s clip.
Ultimately, viewers were equal parts shocked and entertained by just how big—and how spirited—a “puppy” can be when that puppy happens to be a German shepherd cross.
