Aussies love their coffee, but our world-class coffee culture means we can be a bit snobbish about the quality of our brew. And, while I love to indulge in a barista-made takeaway coffee occasionally, I can only afford an almost-AU$10 long black every so often.
Unfortunately, making barista-level java from home does require a good espresso machine, and even at their cheapest, you’re looking at laying out a minimum of AU$500. The sky’s the limit at the top end too – as a case in point, we’ve been relying on Breville's AU$4,599 The Oracle Dual Boiler to keep the Aussie TechRadar team highly caffeinated while we hunt down Black Friday deals.
Save 25% (AU$191)Breville the Barista Express: was AU$769 now AU$578 at The Good GuysThe Good Guys are listing its RRP as AU$699, but Breville still stocks this more affordable option at the price above. It boasts an integrated precision conical burr grinder that doses the perfect amount on demand. It also ensures optimal water pressure and precise espresso extraction and integrates a powerful steam wand for creating gorgeously silky latte art. Use The Good Guys' price beat function to get this price.
If you’d like something less manual, the Barista Express Impress is currently down AU$441 to just AU$758 at Amazon – adding assisted dosing and tamping.

Save 38% (AU$380)Ninja Luxe Café Premier: was AU$999 now AU$619 at AmazonIt's new to Aussie shores, but our 4.5-star Ninja Luxe Café review makes it clear this machine is worth the hype. My colleague Danielle Abraham said it was "an espresso machine anyone can master" that offers pro-level drinks without the effort. It's so good (and easy), in fact, that we think it's the best all-in-one coffee machine right now. She also applauded its consistently great brews, attractive build and excellent value – even at its original price. While it's been discounted several times, this is the best Australian price we've yet seen. The Cyberspace colourway is down to AU$659.

Save 42% (AU$461)Nespresso Vertuo Creatista: was AU$1,099 now AU$638 at AmazonWe think the Vertuo Creatista is currently the best Nespresso machine on the market, which is quite the statement considering the brand has become almost synonymous with coffee. It's one of the more stylish models, too. It boasts a milk-frothing system for lattes and cappuccinos, letting you steam the milk in a pitcher so you can finish your drink by hand like a pro. Plus, this version uses Nespresso's Vertuo pods – making it supremely easy to use, while also providing a range of drink sizes.

Save 26% (AU$259)Smeg BCC13 bean-to-cup machine: was AU$998 now AU$739 at The Good GuysLike every Smeg device, this machine is pretty – but the current price doesn't match its premium looks. It's not just good looking, as we think it's the best automatic coffee machine for hot and cold drinks. Scoring a rare 5 stars in our Smeg BCC13 review, it provides consistent extraction, thick, creamy froth when using dairy milk and extremely easy maintenance. We can't overstate how well-built we think it is, either. Use The Good Guys' price beat function to get this deal.
View DealI'm well aware that, even with the deals above, these machines still aren’t the cheapest; however, if you're a real coffee lover, it’s worth investing in a quality device to ensure you get consistent, high-quality results. And, if you think about it in terms of savings versus buying from your local cafe, one AU$4 coffee every workday adds up to over AU$1,000 a year – so these machines can pay for themselves quite quickly.
That said, if you're looking for something that offers tasty, versatile coffee for a bit less, I've found the deal below for you.
Save 24% (AU$77)Nespresso De'Longhi Pixie: was AU$319 now AU$242 at AmazonWe love the Nespresso Vertuo Pop – now just AU$88 – but the Pixie has it beat as the best coffee pod machine. A major drawback noted in our Nespresso Pixie review is the lack of a milk wand, but this deal includes the Aeroccino 3 frother to help rectify that. This leaves you with a compact, simple, inexpensive machine that provides great-tasting bean juice, either with or without milk.
