JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — One of the region’s fastest rising stars is taking the next step in her athletic journey. University High track standout and state champion Dalencia Kittrell officially signed to continue her career at Lipscomb University during a ceremony Tuesday afternoon.

Kittrell has already built a resume few in East Tennessee can match. She is the state champion in the 400 meters with a time of 55.54 seconds. She holds three school records in the 100, 200 and 400 meters, and this past season swept all three events at the Trojan Timing meet making her the first athlete to do so since 1987.

University High head track and field coach Dan Lawson says Kittrell’s talents go far beyond the stopwatch.

“We could be looking here at one of the best, if not the best, athletes that have gone through the doors of University High,” Coach Lawson said. “It’s unbelievable to a coach. It’s something that you dream about, to have an individual like this that not only has a work ethic like Dalencia does, but how she’s willing to jump in there and do whatever she needs to do.”

Kittrell said she chose Lipscomb not only for its athletic opportunity, but for a campus environment that aligns with her personal goals.

“I knew it was the college for me because of the community. The people there were so nice. The professors were nice. I knew that college would help me get closer to God,” Kitrell said. “It’s a new place to find new friends and everything. It’ll be a big journey to take, but it’ll be fun.”

As she prepares to become a Lipscomb Bison, Kittrell leaves behind a lasting mark and a legacy that continues to grow with every stride.

“I always say, ‘It’s more about the journey than the destination,’” said Coach Lawson. “Today, it’s about a destination, and that destination is Lipscomb. I couldn’t be prouder of Dalencia.”
