It may just be six starts into his NFL career, but fans and the media are starting to grow worried about J.J. McCarthy. His play this season has been lackluster at best, and some are beginning to wonder about the future. This shift in mindset speaks volumes to the current state of development and patience in the NFL, which is reflecting negatively on McCarthy. However, one Vikings veteran spoke up in his defense.
Safety Josh Metellus spoke highly of McCarthy recently, who shared his thoughts on the young quarterback's play so far this season in the postgame press conference following Sunday's 23-6 loss on the road to the Green Bay Packers.
"I ain’t going to lie, I think [No.] 9 is playing great. When you don’t play as a full team and we don’t give each other a chance to win, quarterbacks get the blame. Just like DBs get the blame when some run pops off, we miss a tackle, and it goes for [a long gain].It's never [just] one guy."
It does speak volumes that players are starting to stand up and defend J.J. McCarthy. It shows that this guy does want to win at all costs and is carrying the burden of not playing well, resulting in them dropping games they should be more competitive in. Both sides of the start-or-sit McCarthy stance have solid points, but it appears no one in the Vikings locker room is wavering on Nine.
