Despite his villainous reputation, science says that Dragon Ball's Frieza may just be the "ideal boss" to work for.

Dragon Ball's Frieza is long known as the Emperor of Universe 7. He has not only destroyed Goku and Vegeta's home planet, Planet Vegeta, but also commanded the Frieza Force into conquering and selling planets to other races. As such, he is often considered one of the greatest villains in all anime.

Of course, one may think that Frieza's command over his forces is one based just on fear, but not everyone feels that way. Many fans believe that Frieza's refined manner of speaking and courtesy to everyone he communicates with, makes him an "ideal boss."

While this may seem bogus to many, according to an interview between Dragon Ball and Jun Nakahara, a Professor of Leadership and Organizational Development, science backs it up.

Is Dragon Ball's Frieza Actually a Great Leader?

According to Jun Nakahara, a Professor of Leadership and Organizational Development at the Rikkyo University College of Business, Frieza may actually be a great leader.

As seen during the events in Planet Namek, Frieza uses quick and crystal clear instructions when mobilizing his subordinates. And if someone were to express doubts, instead of going after them, he explains himself logically to avoid any miscommunication and unnecessary labor.

However, it's not just that. Frieza also uses positive feedback to motivate his subordinates to keep up the morale. This is especially evident when the Universal Emperor thanks and compliments Captain Ginyu for successfully gathering all seven Dragon Balls.

"Captain Ginyu, simply outstanding. Once again, you have exceeded my expectations. Not only did you recover all seven Dragon Balls, but you did it with such apparent ease that I'm upset with myself for not having called your men in sooner."

According to Nakahara, Frieza's use of positive feedback was straight out of something called the SBI model (Situation, Behavior, Impact), a real framework used by modern companies to convey clear feedback.

As one must have noticed, when Frieza compliments Captain Ginyu, he lays out the "Situation" over the circumstances of the feedback, points out what specific "Behavior" he was providing feedback on, and explains the positive "Impact" the individual's behavior brought forth.

That said, it is not just Frieza's in-person approach to management that makes him a great boss, but also his policies. Like in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Captain Ginyu reveals that the Frieza Force actually offers birth and child-rearing support.

Similarly, in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Cheelai wanted to join the Frieza Force to escape a life of crime. So, clearly there's something about joining the Frieza Force that draws people in.

Frieza May Be an "Ideal Boss," but Only Until You Follow His Orders

While Frieza may seem like the ideal boss, Jun Nakahara pointed out that since he is running an evil military organization, at its core, Frieza is an evil dictator commanding his subordinates through fear. Anyone who doesn't listen and follow what he says will find themselves dead.

According to Nakahara, when subordinates are fearful, they will follow even the most wicked leaders, yielding short-term results, but that isn't the case for mid and long-term results. In order for a team to be productive in the long term, subordinates need to feel a sense of safety, which isn't the case for the Frieza Force.

In retrospect, people considering Frieza an "ideal leader" may be an indication that the world is being overrun by awful leaders. Amidst all of them, even an evil dictator may seem like a great leader as long as he exudes composure and logic. As such, while working in the Frieza Force may have its own risks, it may not be as bad.
