$5B Already Says The DCU's Biggest Recast Is The Right Choice

The DCU has given several DCEU actors roles in the new franchise - and the most oft-discussed of these makes a lot of sense given their $5B history.

There is already $5 billion worth of evidence to suggest that the DC Universe's biggest recast decision will pay off for the next era of DC's on-screen efforts. The end of the DCEU timeline and the start of the DCU timeline has meant the past few years have been a busy one for DC's movie empire, with the franchise essentially in a consistent state of flux until this year.

While the DCEU has been largely left behind, several actors who previously appeared in this leg of DC's history have been recast in the DCU: be that to reprise their former role, or in a new one entirely. This is a scenario that presents its own risks, but also its own rewards, and one of the DCU's biggest recasts has $5 billion worth of box office evidence to back up the decision.

Jason Momoa's Box Office History Already Shows Why The DC Universe Was Right To Keep The Actor In Its Movie World

Though casting decisions shouldn't be made on financials alone, the box office history Jason Momoa possesses helps underline why the DCU may have been wise to keep the actor as a part of DC's movie world, by recasting from being a member of the Justice League as the DCEU's Aquaman to now being the DCU's Lobo.

Over the course of his career, Jason Momoa has acquired acting credits in a range of movies that collectively made $5.5 billion in terms of their combined box office (as per The Numbers). Notably, $4.4 billion of this comes from roles wherein Momoa was either the sole lead actor or otherwise one of the leads of the instalments in question, which is no small feat.

With Momoa also being one of the highest-grossing actors of 2025 thanks to his role in A Minecraft Movie, it seems his star has not diminished, and his central role in a range of high box office earners certainly suggests he would thus be a benefit to the DCU and its efforts to establish itself.

Jason Momoa's Acting History Further Supports His DCU Recasting

Of course, these box office results would still ultimately mean very little if Jason Momoa's role in these films hadn't been substantial, or reflected the actor's range.

As it stands, Momoa seems as comfortable in films like A Minecraft Movie and The LEGO Movie 2 as he is in releases like Fast X and Dune, which bodes well for his role in a franchise like the DCU, wherein actors may need to perform in releases that have notably different ranges relatively close together.

Similarly, Jason Momoa has built up considerable experience with big and long-term franchises over the years, as can be seen with his work not only in the DCEU and the other aforementioned films, but also with his work in television series like Game of Thrones.

With Supergirl's release on the horizon, the first true test of Jason Momoa's DC Universe recasting is less than a year away - but until then, this box office history bodes well for the franchise and its on-screen iteration of Lobo the bounty hunter.
