DC's relationship to the Milestone roster of characters has always been a complicated affair. While DC has integrated Milestone heroes like Static, Rocket, Icon, and Hardware into their main continuity before, that typically doesn't last long.
In 2020, DC sought to make better use of the heroes and supporting cast from Milestone books by launching the Milestone Returns series. This line established a new version of the Dakotaverse and gave Milestone's heroes their own books and storylines.
Now, that new era may be ending, as DC is teasing that the Dakotaverse and the main DC Universe are on a collision course. New History of the DC Universe: The Dakota Incident is set to reshape Milestone's roster and, according to DC editor Marquis Draper, will define Static's future going forward.
Static's Next Era Is Coming, and It's Going To Be Huge

On his Bluesky account, Draper posted "Buckle up for an epic story from the recent past, that sets the stage for Static's future."

So far, the only thing fans know about the upcoming Dakota Incident series is that it is a huge event that will see the heroes of Dakota City square off with the U.S. Government.
Despite this, it seems a large focus of the event will be on integration, or at least interaction, with the main DC Universe. The series' title also marks it as a follow-up to the recently concluded New History of the DC Universe, which finally clarified many important elements of the main DC Universe's canon.
What remains to be seen, however, is what exactly this new era for Static and the other Milestone heroes will look like.
Static Has Huge Potential That DC Is Only Just Now Realizing
Static Shock preparing and electric punch
Created by Denys Cowan, Dwayne McDuffie, Christopher Priest, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle in 1993, Static has long been Milestone's breakout character.
Milestone's grounded portrayal of a young hero trying to balance his superhero and personal lives was well received during the original comic's run. That popularity would only explode with the release of the Static Shock animated series in 2000.
Unfortunately, DC's subsequent history with the character was a mixed bag. Attempts to have him work alongside teams like the Teen Titans were short-lived, while other Milestone heroes were lucky if they had cameos.
Much to the acclaim of fans, however, Milestone Returns brought the brand's heroes back into their own universe, giving them far more room to breathe.
The Milestone Returns line has been critically acclaimed, meaning there is a certain amount of trepidation about the new era.
While some hesitation is understandable, The Dakota Incident sports an all-star list of talented writers, including Stephanie Williams, Joseph Illidge, Nikolas Draper-Ivey, and Morgan Hampton.
This, coupled with the acclaim Milestone's reboot has received from fans and critics alike, point to the future of Static and the entire Milestone line of characters being very bright.
