Von Miller responds to Broncos declining 2025 reunion

Washington Commanders pass rusher Von Miller revealed on his "Free Range" podcast that he reached out to Denver Broncos general manager George Paton during NFL free agency this spring.

"I did reach out to the Denver Broncos," Miller said. "I tried to be on the Denver Broncos as well, but it was just a short conversation with me and George Paton."

Paton explained to Miller that Denver had Jonah Elliss and Dondrea Tillman behind starters Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper on the edge. Elliss and Tillman both totaled five sacks as rotational pass rushers in 2024, and they both contribute on special teams. Miller acknowledged that he's not going to contribute in the kicking game at this stage of his career, and he had a very mature response to Paton's explanation.

"They both play special teams and they do all the grunt work," Miller said of Elliss and Tillman. "You know, me, I'm a three-point shooter. Like, I'm gonna come in, I'm gonna shoot the three point. Like, when I'm in the game, I'm ball-hogging, I'm just trying to make the play, then they take me out. But they didn't really need that, you know. They didn't really need that this year."

Miller's right. While a reunion would have been fun, the Broncos did not have room for him on the roster (and the defense currently leads the NFL with 49 sacks). Miller said that he hopes to become a general manager in the future, and he understood the team's roster construction.

While Paton didn't have a spot for Miller this season, the 36-year-old pass rusher left the door open for a potential return to Denver down the road.

"Who knows what it will look like this coming up year," Miller said.

Miller signed a one-year deal with the Commanders this offseason. His squad will host the Broncos on Sunday Night Football in Week 13.
